Sam Sessa and the WTMD Crew were invited into Marcia Ball's home studio to talk about her new album and hear a new song from it. Between the Grooves: Schuyler Fisk Wins the Prize

Singer/actress Schuyler Fisk retreated to the rural Virginia where she grew up to make her second album Blue Ribbon Winner.

The daughter of Oscar winner Sissy Spacek's displays a soothingly smooth voice, a keen ear for bouncy pop/Americana melodies and a mom and apple pie kind-of vibe.

Schuyler Fisk plays this week's Between the Grooves, Thursday at 2pm on WTMD.

Check out the Sam Jones-directed ("I am Trying to Break Your Heart") video for Schuyler's "What Good is Love" that came out of a recent Vanity Fair photo shoot.

CD of the Week: Black Joe Lewis Gets Scandalous!

After a 2009 debut that told us what their name was, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears take a fan mandate for more unpolished, garage soul, please, and make another gloriously hedonistic, brassy gem, Scandalous, WTMD's new CD of the Week.

What more can you say about a band that sounds like Ike Turner and the Stooges on a bad blind date?! Those two might have wound up at the "Mustang Ranch,"  the Nevada brothel to which Black Joe pays homage.

Funkify with floor shaker "Black Snake,"  get seduced by the slinky bass, groovy guitar lick and reverbed saxophone on the highlight title song, "She's So Scandalous" and tap into the Howlin' Wolf/early Stones acoustic blues vibe of "Messin," and with apologies to Scott Mullins, you've got one heck of a dirty soul party!

Jim Eno of Spoon produced his fellow Austinites for the second straight time. Check out tracks from Scandalous all week long on TMD!

Get Between the Grooves With Ivan and Alyosha

The songs on Seattle quintet Ivan and Alyosha's new EP Fathers Be Kind both question and embrace faith.  That's not unexpected since the band is named after two sibling characters in a Dostoevsky novel who are on both sides of the spiritual spectrum.

They've combined religious themes with rich harmonies and punchy melodies that result in a delightful discovery for 2011.

Catch Ivan and Alyosha on this week's Between the Grooves, Thursday at 2pm.

CD of the Week: Listen to The Damnwells

Perseverance pays off on their new fan-funded release, No One Listens to the Band Anymore, WTMD's new CD of the Week.

Getting to this new CD has a back story worth telling.

The Damnwells poured their hearts and souls into into their latest CD only to see it sit on the shelf...and it wasn't even their own shelf.

The Damnwells were signed to Epic in 2004. Following a year of studio immersion for what eventually would become Air Stereo, the release date for the record repeatedly got pushed back until frontman Alex Dezen received the bad news they had been dropped by the label.

The setback only strengthened the resolve of Dezen and bassist Ted Hudson, who stayed together throughout those days of devastating setbacks chronicled in the cant-miss music documentary, Golden Days.

Dezen's lush vocals and sophisticated alt-pop songwriting take on a Neil Finn-like quality.

On the acoustic number, "The Great Unknown," Dezen nods to misfortune, "We are not afraid/we are underpaid/and waiting for the world to disappear."

Thankfully for us, The Damnwells have not.

CD of the Week: A Blessed Lucinda

The often broken hearted, yet always resiliant Lucinda Williams returns with Blessed, WTMD's CD of the Week.

And since getting married to her manager onstage in Minneapolis two years ago, the whiskey-voiced roots rocker seems to blissfully reflect the title of her new record.

The songs on Blessed are less autobiographical and more character-driven. On "Soldier's Song," she sings about a serviceman's battle overseas and his family's on the home front, while standout "Seeing Black" delves into the final dark thoughts of late Georgia songwriter Vic Chestnut and features a blazing guitar solo from Elvis Costello.

The long awaited follow up to 19 has arrived! Adele's 21 brings more maturity greater than the two years between records.  Adele's success with 19 has brought her and 21 immediate attention from critics and fans alike.  Her show at the 930 sold out quickly, no doubt due to the combination of her talent and sophisticated yet child like personality.  She's said many times she lives in the day; not expecting her ride on the fame train to last long.  If 21 is any indication, we'll be just as excited for 31 in ten years time!
