Hoppin' Down the Weekend Trail

It's Easter weekend, and besides the usual menagerie of egg hunts, Peeps and anthropomorphic rabbits, Baltimore says goodbye to a landmark.  The Recher Theatre is closing its doors on Sunday, with the help of the bands that made it special.  So let's give it a proper send-off, shall we?

Weekend on the Radio: Cherry Blossoms n' History Edition

It's been awhile, but Weekend on the Radio is back!  Although it doesn't feel like it, yesterday was the first day of spring, and that means it's time for our nation's capital to celebrate the cherry blossom.  Nothing makes DC pop quite like the beautiful blossoms.  If blossoms aren't your thing, those crazy kids at the Bell Foundry are throwing a shindig to raise money for their garden and skate park.  Hopefully there is an empty pool; those provide some sweet grindage.

Weekend on the Radio Recap: Monster Jam Edition

Spring is upon us, and it turns a young man's fancy to thoughts of love and smashing cars.  That's right folks, it's Monster Jam time again here in Charm City, and all your favorites will be in town to smash some Pintos into oblivion.  There is something profoundly American about it all.  Also, The Ravens cheerleaders will be holding tryouts for next season's squad, and the one and only Jon Stewart is taking over the Meyerhoff.  Let's boogie!

Weekend on the Radio: Battle of the Bands Edition

Every year, we at  WTMD teams up with our friends at the Recher Theatre to throw a shindig in celebration of our anniversary.  This year, we have gathered some of the best bands on the local scene, and will have them battle it out for supremacy.  As if that wasn't enough, it will be one of the final live music shows in the Recher's hallowed halls.  Come on down and support us!

Weekend on the Radio: My Funny Valentine Edition

Here at Weekend on the Radio Headquarters, we don't care if Valentine's Day is a legitimate way to show someone you love them, or a cheap ploy to sell greeting cards.  Either way, it's a great excuse to get out of the house.   So put on your dancin' shoes and check out Tilted Torch's Valentines Cabaret, or if you are looking for another shot at love, try the Village Learning Place's annual Second Chance Prom.

Weekend on the Radio: Super Bowl Recovery Edition

We here at Weekend on the Radio Headquarters know you haven't gotten over The Ravens' stunning victory over the 49ers, so we're here to help you keep the good vibes rolling.  Baltimoreans are constantly on the move, so what better way to celebrate than by checking out the Motortrend auto-show.  If speed isn't your thing but you like the idea of a bunch of trucks serving delicious meals, I have three words for you: food truck rally.  Either way, bask in the afterglow of the Ravens' victory.

Weekend on the Radio: Super Bowl Shuffle Edition

Usually I begin my weekly recap with a few clever quips about the fun weekend activities in and around Charm City, but this week there is one event that overshadows them all.  Our Baltimore Ravens are in New Orleans preparing to bring another ring home.  Enjoy the game, and stay safe.  Save me a chicken wing or two.

Weekend on the Radio Recap: Frostbite Edition

It finally feels like January, as Baltimore has plunged into 14 degree weather.  What better way to celebrate than to hurl yourself into the Chesapeake Bay?  It's Polar Bear Plunge time again, and while diving into sub-zero waters might not be your cup of tea, it's for a pretty good cause.  Also, John Waters stops by the Meyerhoff to demonstrate proper hairspray use, and we see, hear, touch and feel Fooled Again

It's beginning to look a lot like something here at Weekend on the Radio Headquarters.  This week, "Smilin'" Sam Gallant dances with the Rat King in The Nutcracker, checks out Thurston Moore's new project at the Ottobar, and purchases some last minute gifts at The City Paper's Last Minute Gift Show.  I'm hoping he gets me some figgy pudding.

Weekend on the Radio Recap: O Tannenbaum Edition

The Christmas season technically starts the day after Thanksgiving, but it doesn't start in Charm City until our beloved Washington Monument gets lit.  Fortunately, it's going down tonight, so break out the egg nog and figgy pudding.  Afterwards, be sure to stop by your local McDonald's for a Royale with Cheese, or Le Big Mac.

Elvis' birthday isn't for another month, but The King is taking over Charm City this weekend.  Elvis impersonators from all over the world are invading Luithuanian Hall for Night of 100 Elvises, and The King, The Killer, The Man in Black and The King of Rockabilly are gathering in the Hippodrome to jam in front of the faithful.  Let's shake, rattle and roll, Peggy Sue.

This week, Anthony Bourdain comes to the Hippodrome to lay weapons grade snark on Charm City's foodie population.  20 bucks says he will mention The Wire.  He likes that show.
