Mix Tape Thursday, 8/27/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

8 a.m. Jean Luebke

We're taking lots of long family car trips this summer. Listening to great upbeat music always helps make those drives a lot more bearable!

* "Now," by Mates of State
* "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" by She & Him
* "FNT," by Semisonic
* "Hold It In," by Jukebox The Ghost

12 p.m. Abigail Higgs

These are love(ish) tunes by a few bands playing at Virgin Mobile Fest. I like them because I've put each one on a mix CD after a bad break-up when I played the cliché part of love-scorned ex, compiling songs to give to my former lover. Of course, these mixes were never delivered; rather, they make up a nice autobiographical music collection on a spindle kept just below a poster of Morrisey.

* "You Are Free," by Mates of State
* "Daughters of the Soho Riots," by The National
* "Take Me Out," by Franz Ferdinand
* "Pink Triangle," by Weezer

6 p.m. Adam Rutledge

No real reasoning reached, simply selecting some songs so more music minded men and women will want what WTMD does during daily duties.

* "Vittorio E," by Spoon
* "The Beast," by Angus and Julia Stone
* "None Shall Pass," by Aesop Rock
* "Buildings and Mountains," by The Republic Tigers
* "Treat Yo Momma," by The John Butler Trio

Mix Tape Thursday, 6/25/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

7 a.m. Jill Bucolo

This is actually the first five songs of the mix tape my boyfriend at the time--who is now my husband--used to listen to on the way to All Good when it was at Wilmers Park

* "Carnival," by The Band
* "Hurricane," by Bob Dylan
* "Road to Nowhere," by Talking Heads
* "Dear Mr. Fantasy," by Blind Faith
* "One More Saturday Night," by The Grateful Dead

9 a.m. Jean Tansey

Girls and summer, celebrating the first days of summer!

* "Girls In Their Summer Clothes," by Bruce Springsteen
* "Vacation," by The GoGos
* "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," by Cindy Lauper

11 a.m. Beth Lacey Gill

Five songs I didn't know before Virgin Fest 2007. I still listen to them constantly!

* "Narc," by Interpol
* "Fidelity," by Regina Spektor
* "I Turn My Camera On," by Spoon
* "Young Folks," by Peter, Bjorn & John
* "Your Hand in Mine," by Explosions in the Sky

1 p.m. Sarah Morgan

Some of my favorite songs for summer.

* "Sausalito," by Conor Oberst
* "Fat Man in the Bathtub," by Little Feat
* "Salvation," by The Avett Brothers
* "The Underdog," by Spoon
* "Wagon Wheel," by Old Crow Medicine Show

5 p.m. Miranda Sinicrope

I chose these songs because I feel that they represent the diverse sounds of what is coming out of the indie genre. It's exciting for these artists who, for the most part have been around and touring for years, to be succeeding while bands such as Passion Pit and the Harlem Shakes are creating a new exciting sound.

* "The Reeling," by Passion Pit
* "High Lonesome," by The Gaslight Anthem
* "Two Weeks," by Grizzly Bear
* "1901," by Phoenix
* "Sunlight," by Harlem Shakes

7 p.m. Tom Geary

These five songs were my favorite performances of the past two Virgin Festivals in Baltimore. It's moments like these that remind me of how much of a blast I had in '07 and '08 at Pimlico and get me excited for this year's festival!

* "Honeybear," by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
* "Your Touch," by The Black Keys
* "Ain't No Easy Way," by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
* "Fortunate Son," by Cat Power
* "Pioneer to the Falls," by Interpol

Submit your own mixtape and enter a drawing to win a pair of VIP tickets to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, TN!

6 a.m. Jessica Campain

These were my favorite acts at Bonnoroo in 2007, my only time there...but I am making a 2009 mix as well for when I win these tickets! :-) Thanks guys!
  • "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," by Wilco
  • "The Hardest Button to Button," by The White Stripes
  • "Don't You Evah," by Spoon
  • "Professor," by Damien Rice
  • "Tamacun," by Rodrigo y Gabriela

8 a.m. Laura Renner

My favorite Bonnaroo artists.
  • "Measuring Cups," by Andrew Bird
  • "Maps," by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • "Peacebone," by Animal Collective
  • "Love and Happiness," by Al Green
  • "Funeral," by Band of Horses

10 a.m. Allie Barnes
  • "Stop the Bus," by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
    She's an amazing artist and this song live is awesome.
  • "Road Song," by Steel Train
    It's the ultimate traveling song, and it reminds me of being at Bonnaroo. (And Steel Train is one of the best live bands out there.)
  • "The Ark," by Dr. Dog
  • "So Glad To See You," by Hot Chip
    This gives the mix a different vibe, and Hot Chip is one of the best bands to dance to--especially at a festival,
  • "I'm Amazed," by My Morning Jacket
    MMJ is the ultimate festival band and this is the best encore song.

12 p.m. Ned Samson

The first three are side projects of different members of The Strokes. The fourth is a Strokes cover. And the last if The Strokes themselves.
  • "Brandy of the Damned," by Nickel Eye
  • "GfC," by Albert Hammond, Jr.
  • "Brand New Start," by Little Joy
  • "Last Nite," by Adele
  • "Someday," by The Strokes

4 p.m. Lauren Seserko

I chose these songs because I've never been to Bonnaroo and am not able to attend this year (unless I win!). I hope to attend next year.

If I were there this year, this would be my mix tape on the drive down to get me pumped to see this amazing acts. Its pretty much a selection of my favorite Bonnaroo 2009 artists!
  • "Kids," by MGMT
  • "Next Messiah," by Jenny Lewis
  • "L.E.S. Artistes," by Santigold
  • "Skinny Love," by Bon Iver
  • "Golden Age," by TV on the Radio

These are my top five bands, with a strong song from each of them.
Each song makes me want to sing along and have fun.

  • "Daylight," by Matt & Kim
  • "Submarines of Stockholm," by A. C. Newman
  • "Arms Tonight," by Mother Mother
  • "Better Things," by Passion Pit
