re: flaming lips - yoshimi battles the pink robots

the song played during the countdown was YBTPR PART II. While I think this is a great song, I believe that the song voted for by most listeners would have been YBTPR PART I. I think you guys have made some sort of mistake. Can you play that song also?

I'd like to say that this countdown is the best thing I have ever heard. I hope you continue to play them. I look over the list and hate that I missed all these songs.

I heard Steve mention that, as the countdown got closer to #1, people would be hearing more songs that they liked. Well, I have heard great songs since #897.

Sometimes, I hear a song and wonder how could that be anyone's top 10, but I think it's great that they got the chance to hear their song on the radio - even if they used multiple computers or friends to get it into the top 897.

Could you say how many votes a song needed to make the countdown or even list the number of votes for each song - there must have been some ties.

I heard Steve hustling the intern to get the blog updated this morning. Sometimes haste makes waste. You need to fix Todd Rudgren > Todd Rundgren, Jack Johnson - Bubble T oes > Toes, Hall and Otas > Oats, Xrowded House > Crowded, The V elvet Underground > Velvet, and was Snow Patrol - Chasing Guitars > Chasing Cars?

Thanks for the great music?

I echo Karl's comment precisely. I voted for Part 1. Also, just curious, could you tell me how many total votes were submitted?

I would like to applaud everyone at WTMD for compiling this list! It has reaquanted me with songs that have faded from my memory. Thank You.

hey everyone thanks for leaving your comments, i'm having a great time putting up the list and more importantly enjoying listening to the countdown here in the studio

we got over 10,000 votes, unfortunately we cannot play YTBPR Part 1 now Karl, Preeti, glad we could bring back the memories

keep posting the comments and enjoy the final countdown today, I'm going to hang here all day posting each song so enjoy!

The list is great, but I am surprised not to see two bands that were "discovered" in Baltimore by WCVT or WTMD that did not make the list. The Blue Nile, and Camel are being overlooked. Maybe I go back too far, but I never would have heard of those bands if not for this station. Also, WCVT was very big on a local artist, JoAnn Dodds (spelling may be in error). Whatever happened to her?

This was a lot of fun, and I loved following the countdown. Great music! I gotta say, though, that I am surprised at how few women appeared in the top 100, and none in the top 20. I realize this is a reflection of the listeners, but it is disappointing. I'd be interested in others' thoughts about this.

well, i guess i was nitpicking. i realize what a massive undertaking this must have been. great job everyone! you guys rock.

The countdown has made wonderful radio, I have listened to a lot of public radio and therefore pledge drives. This is one pledge drive I did not mind tuning into. What a great idea please repeat it next year. It was amazing how close to my taste the majority of the music was. Just shows you have great listeners.

You guys did an awesome job with the ountdown. It was really fascinating to see what made the list. I am sure a cultural anthropologist would have a field day! One minor request. Can you guys update 492 the Velvet Underground with the name of the song? Thanks!!!

I have to say, that I was very happy with the top two in particular especially Imagine as number 1. Such a powerful, emotional, and hopeful song rightfully deserves no other place on the list.

Ps. Thanks for fixing Elliott Smith's name, it is one of my major pet peves when people misspell his name...

I am a member of the "Baltimore Ethical Society" and we have "Imagine" in our song book. It is a perfect song to be number one.

Very Cool!
Sorry I missed this countdown, the list is awesome, songs I hadn't thought of or heard in years. I'm a little old for the college radio scene (44), but the majority of these songs a among my favorites. (and my 17 year old daughter, who is also a listener--with an 89.7 bumper sticker on her car--is familiar with he Death Cab for Cutie, et al.
Great job, hope to vote next year--if you do it again!

Re: WCVT. I used to love WCVT c. 1993 or so. I heard Steve Lorber ("The Mystic Eyes" program) guesting on WETA-FM's "Songs for Aging Children" a few years before it went off the air itself.

Just to let you know, "Ohio", was written by Neil Young and performed by CSNY.

Wow-can't believe "Billie Jean" or any other Michael Jackson solo song didn't make the list...must be his unpopularity in public opinion. Plus--Madonna only got one. No "Vogue" or "Borderline" or "Express Yourself"--songs that really evoke their respective eras. And no "Joey" by Concrete Blonde. Minor quibbles. Fantastic list!

Sure, U2 has made some great songs ("Bad" being my favorite), but there's way too much U2 on this list! And only one B-52's song? (the fair-to-middling-for-them "Love Shack" at that) Ever heard of "Rock Lobster" at least?

Widespread gets shut out. Public Enemy makes it in. Where is the justice in that nonsense?

"another girl, another planet" by the only ones, ca. 1978? surely the greatest pop song of all time (for punkers and classic rockers alike).

I don't know guys. Avril's "Girlfriend" should AT LEAST be in the top ten.

gopack91 said...

No love for Boston - "More than a Feeling" in the top 897?

You missed the inclusion of "Roam" in the list...

Interesting list.

667 - The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23 was a big hit but is a note for note copy of the original recording by Shuggie Otis. Only 16 years old at the time, Shuggie wrote, performed, and arranged the track.

Great album called Freedom Flight and produced by his father, the great Johnny Otis. He had some heavyweight musicians on that record like George Duke, Wilton Felder, and Aynsley Dunbar.

I wonder what happened to him. I thought he was going to be a major artist after that effort.

Why is Dar Williams on here and not California Girls? otherwise..its a pretty good list

Anonymous said...

Glad to see Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons made it to these lists, but surprised that "Love Hurts" did not make it. It's arguably the best version of the song written by one of the best songwriters in history.

Only 1 Rush song? The people that think they get Rush never really got Rush. The Spirit of Radio was about a radio station in Canada that played truly alternative music before commercialism turned stations like the old 70's HFS into the modern day TMDs of the world. If you remember WGTB you know what I am talking about.

Is there really no Sam Cooke on here? This list is a farce
