Kenny Liner on Stuck in the Jam

Tune in at 9 p.m. Wednesday as Bug counts down to the All Good Music Festival in Masontown, WV, with an encore broadcast of The Bridge co-founder Kenny Liner's Stuck in the Jam takeover. Liner showcases some of his influences with tracks from Townes Van Zandt, My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers and Larry Williams.

Plus, in the second hour, Bug's Phresh Phish segment features selections from Phish's second night at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sunday, June 27th. 

The Bridge kicks off the first full day of All Good at 1 p.m. Friday on the Dragon Stage.

A couple years removed from PHISH's (then) last show, the innovative keyboardist stopped by the WTMD studios (pictured with our very own Bug) to promote his self-titled solo album, which spawned the TMD favorite, "Beauty of a Broken Heart."

McConnell said that after the break up, he built a home studio. He and co-producer/engineer Jared Slomoff, patched together the music and lyrics that wound up on the album. And legendary session drummer Jim Keltner added his magic touch to the recording.

"He was just the nicest guy you could meet. Everybody knows him from the John Lennon 'Imagine' sessions," McConnell said. "He was such a pro and had so many stories. We were hanging on every word!"

And given that a couple of his Phish bandmates appeared on his disc too, we couldn't help but press Page just a little bit as to the status of any possible reunion.

I'm an avid concert goer but for some reason the stars have not quite aligned for me to attend any of the past Virgin Fests. This year I'm ready and able but without tickets. I love the lineup and one of the featured artists, Public Enemy, takes me back to my college days when I hosted my own weekly radio show.

I remember one occasion in particular when I decidedly became non compliant with our Top 40 dinner hour format. I blared Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise" over the campus airways into the cafeteria much to the dismay of our station manager. I danced around the booth and thrashed my head to the bustin’ rap beat and loved every minute of it.

Luckily, I was able to maintain my DJ status and my friends who were in the cafeteria lauded my little musical stunt- “Bass, how low can you go!” Here are some of my favorite tunes from this year’s Virgin Fest lineup.

What Defines a Great Recording Artist?

It's relatively easy to rattle off a list of great songs or albums, but what defines a great recording artist? Is it record sales? #1 songs? A showcase night on American Idol?

Producer Brian Eno once noted, The Velvet Underground never sold a lot of records, but everyone who bought one went on to form a band.

Ani DiFranco, on the other hand, sells a lot of records. But she does it on her own terms. DiFranco founded Righteous Babe, an independent label, long before the Internet was a series of tubes while reimagining an artists' business model--and redefining the role of the singer-songwriter--for the MySpace generation.

Bands such as the Grateful Dead and Phish reinvented their songs and set lists every night, creating a new concert experience for fiercely loyal fans and introducing a series of live albums and bootlegs that, arguably, are just as important as their studio work.

Jeff Buckley is fondly remembered for one amazing album. And, like a lot of artists who died too young, a catalog of posthumous releases (and an assembly line of vocal imitators) has tried to fill the void.

George Clinton receives royalties every time someone samples Parliament-Funkadelic. When does he ever get credit for the originals?

Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits are enjoying a renaissance in the twilight of their careers. They never experienced the mass adulation (and scorn) as when Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar, but where would popular music be without Various Positions or Rain Dogs?

Are younger songwriters like Jack White and Ryan Adams so prolific--with so many incarnations--that it's hard to identify a career-defining album?

How many of these artists qualify as the Greatest Artists of All Time?

I think his voice sounds a little like Dracula's voice and that makes me think of the Dracula song in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (song #2). It's a short funny song, but it's actually pretty good. Then that song makes me think of the line "Send me all your vampires" in song #3. And of course that then makes me think of Vampire Weekend. Did you follow all of that?

  I think this song is great and it just shows how awesome WTMD is—where else would you hear a song like this? Thanks for introducing it to me!

Trey Anastasio will perform with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on May 21st at the Meyerhoff!!

The first half will be Marin Alsop and company performing classic PHISH songs and solo Anastasio compositions. The second half will feature the East Coast premiere of Time Turns Elastic an epic guitar and orchestral piece by Trey and longtime collaborator Don Hart that's been getting raves.

Apparently, Trey and Marin met at Carnegie Hall last year.

Quite a coup for Baltimore, especially given that PHISH is not making a whistle stop here on in DC as part of their reunion tour.

PHISH-Heads lineup for Bonnaroo

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, PHISH, TV on the Radio, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Beastie Boys, NIN, and Rodrigo Y Gabriella- just to name a few. Tune in @ 720am this morning for complete lineup (so far).

The festival takes place June 11-14 in Manchester, Tennessee.

Phish Will Reunite

According to phish.com in a video posted by the guys they will be reuniting for 3 shows in Virginia at Hampton Coliseum playing their first public show in 4 years, 6 months, 19 days on March 6...They plan on adding more dates
