Mix Tape Thursday, 5/28/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

6 a.m. Jim McGuire

I call my tape "Five 90-degree Turns That Almost Form a Circle." I wanted five singer/songwriters who each pushed their music--from five different periods--in a new, exciting direction for their times. And of late, Brett does that and still sorta brings it all back home.

* "Subterranean Homesick Blues," by Bob Dylan
* "Ziggy Stardust," by David Bowie
* "No Surrender," by Bruce Springsteen
* "Cradle and All," by Ani DiFranco
* "There Is So Much More," by Brett Dennen

8 a.m. Bobby Gomon

Top Five Psychic Break Songs of All Time

* "You're Gonna Miss Me," 13th Floor Elevators
The group popularized the term "psychedelic" while setting the benchmark for massive consumption of the same. Roky Erickson was the point man for the acid generation. Diagnosis is unclear, he was institutionalized after the break. And no band ever highlighted the amplified jug to better result.

* "See Emily Play," by Pink Floyd
Syd Barrett's excess (including all known major hallucinogens) was part of the magic. Diagnosis is unclear--no apparent "Francis Farmer factor" family manipulation of disadvantaged psychic state, may have had institutional stays. He rode a bike with a smile on his face in later years.

* "Good Vibrations," by The Beach Boys
Brian Wilson story includes extended mind bending, strong "Francis Farmer factor" predatory family behavior (the "hamburger songs" are Dennis Wilson's musical legacy, etc.). Actual diagnosis is unclear, confined by illness for sustained periods-if not institutionalized. Currently demons seem to be at bay.

* "Green Manalishi," by Fleetwood Mac
Peter Green's transcendent blues took him to realms never imaged by Sun Ra-musically and psychically. Single specific LSD "overdose" in Germany is an incomplete explaination for all that followed. Multiple diagnosis in popular press highlight the unclear actual underlying problem(s). Was institutionalized on numurous occasions (including "electroconvulsant therapy"), but "Francis Farmer" family/associates manipulation clearly in evidence. Even B.B. King said no white dude ever had the blues like Peter.

* "Layla," by Derek and the Dominos
Jim Gordon wrote and played the piano part in the Coda for this song. He had long history of polypharmacy abuse, and was diagnosed as schizophrenic after murdering his mother with a hammer. He remains incarcerated (sentenced to 16 years for the murder in 1983-has not been able to get a transfer to psychiatric facility, for unclear reasons). One certainly hopes he is able to realize some of the joy his music has brought to others.

10 a.m. Brad Willard
These are all great live acts I saw at Rock Werchter in Belgium last summer.

* "National Anthem," by Radiohead
* "Modern Guilt," by Beck
* "Time to Pretend," by MGMT
* "Hate to Say I Told You So," by The Hives
* "Steady as She Goes," by The Raconteurs

12 p.m. Lisa Warren

I've had the travel itch lately, so it got me thinking about a mix tape with the theme of travel. When I started picking songs, I was surprised how many I could have fit in here, but I decided these were some of my favorites.

Most are pretty self-explanatory: the name of the song, the name of the band, the name of the album (and in all cases the idea of travel or movement is there).

* "Mykonos," by Fleet Foxes
* "Cab," by Train
* "95 South," by The Duhks
* "Gonna Move," by Paul Pena
* "Georgia On My Mind," by Willie Nelson

4 p.m. Chris Hohenstein

Because it's good music.

* "Hey," by The Pixies
* "Day We Met," by Sara Borges
* "Jane Says," by Jane's Addiction
* "Another Day," by Jimmy's Chicken Shack

6 p.m. Karen Blake

These songs always take me back to my time in the Colorado Mountains when I lived in the Rockies. Long winters, gorgeous summers and nothing but good times.

* "Old Folks Boogie," by Little Feat
* "Rocky Mountain Way," by Joe Walsh
* "Mandolin Wind," by Rod Stewart
* "That's the Way," by Led Zeppelin

Remembering Jay Bennett

By now you've probably heard that Wilco's former multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett died over the weekend in his sleep in Illinois. He was just 45 and had no health insurance despite his desperate need for a hip surgery.

When we had Jay in for a session in 2006, he was affable and excited about his new album, The Magnificent Defeat. But, as one who follows Wilco and who has seen the pivotal scene (in the documentary I am Trying to Break Your Heart) with Jeff Tweedy that led to Jay's departure from the band a million times, I took away from our conversation that he never really got over the experience.

I recalled our conversation when I heard that Jay was planning on suing Wilco for unpaid royalties. I think the move spoke more to the state of uninsured musicians than holding on to a grudge, really.

Jay Bennett's talents are showcased on many records, including Blues Travelers's Bastardos, but to really tap into what this literal math genius and studio whiz contributed to rock and roll, pop in the dreamy, piano-soaked circus of "Pieholden Suite" on Wilco's Summerteeth.

RIP Jay. Thanks for being a driving force in the creation of one of my favorite records, Being There.

Mix Tape Thursday, 5/21/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

7 a.m. Kathleen Milbourne

I call these "Morrissey Songs Not Sung By Morrissey." Basically, songs that capture the trademark awesome lyricism and delivery of the great man, and are fabulous songs in and of themselves, as well.

Cilla Black is actually one of Moz's childhood favorites, and I think you can see her influence on him, as well.

* "The Prayer," by Bloc Party
* "Lost in the Plot," by The Dears
* "Barricade," by Stars
* "I've Been Wrong Before," by Cilla Black

9 a.m. Alyssa Stokes

These songs have a great mix of humor, emotion and energy.
Truly original and all around fun listening!

* "Trashcan," by Delta Spirit
* "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," by Flaming Lips
* "Sipping on Sweet Nectar," by Jens Lekman
* "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," by Vampire Weekend

11 a.m. Amanda Torbit

These are songs that WTMD has turned me onto.

I would have never found without listening to this radio station and now I can't imagine my life without them. Well, besides Patty Griffin--she's just my favorite and I love her so every list must have a Patty song.

* "In My Life," by Warren Haynes
* "Taste of Danger," by Jonatha Brooke and Davy Knowles
* "Gavin's Song," by Marc Broussard
* "You Don't See It," by The Duhks
* "Forgiveness," by Patty Griffin

1 p.m. Ryan Gardiner

I can never make it through these songs' respective albums without repeating these tracks.

* "We're the Same," by Matthew Sweet
* "You Are My Face," by Wilco
* "Smile," by The Jayhawks
* "Cannonball," by Damien Rice

5 p.m. Drew Walker

With no ticket to All Good yet, I decided to pick the top five songs I want to hear at Bonnaroo this year.

* "Hockey," by 3 a.m. Spanish
* "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," by Cage the Elephant
* "100 Yard Dash," by Raphael Saadiq
* "Out at Sea," by Heartless Bastards
* "Wilson," by Phish

7 p.m. Jay Somers

Hey man, what can I say? I got a fever and the only cure is some Bens!

* "Catch My Disease," by Ben Lee
* "Landed," by Ben Folds
* "Wasted and Ready," by Ben Kweller
* "Bruised," by The Bens
* "Steal My Kisses," by Ben Harper

Mix Tape Thursday, 5/14/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

6 a.m. Tyler Waldman

Four very different songs by awesome local artists. Sure, only one of these acts has really hit it big, but all of them certainly deserve to.

* "Copy Write," by Caleb and Saleem
* "OK Apartment," by Oranges Band
* "Cyberspace Lip Gloss," by Karmella's Game
* "My Girls," by Animal Collective

8 a.m. Doug Desmarais

Roberta Flack's version of "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," found on her debut LP "First Take," is the definitive version of this Cohen classic. Breathtaking. Roberta Flack's cover of "Suzanne" is another classic. She is a masterful interpreter. (I'd love to see her do an entire album of Cohen songs . . . ) And Johnny Cash's acoustic resurrection included a great take of "Bird on a Wire." Fantastic.

* "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," by Roberta Flack
* "Suzanne," by Roberta Flack
* "Bird on a Wire," by Johnny Cash

10 a.m. Stanley Feldman

Five songs I've had stuck in my head recently.

* "Perfect Skin," by Lloyd Cole
* "Vicious," by Lou Reed
* "Spanish Bombs," by The Clash
* "Beercan," by Beck
* "Big Time Sensuality (Fluke Minimix)," by Bjork

12 p.m. Beth Homa

These songs are random, as random as my life is. Each reminds me of person or an experience that have been pivotal in my progression of life. Plus they are just really good songs.

* "Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo," by Grateful Dead
* "Another Saturday Night," by Cat Stevens
* "Memphis Train," by Buddy Miles
* "Ain't No Sunshine," by Bill Withers
* "Crying," by Roy Orbison

4 p.m. Kevin Majoros

Heavenly songs.

* "Sheep Go to Heaven," by Cake
* "Just Like Heaven," by Kate Melua
* "Come On Get Higher," by Matt Nathanson
* "Heaven," by Los Lonely Boys
* "Heavenly Day," by Patty Griffin

6 p.m. Raffi Creech

* "Shimmer and Shine," by Ben Harper and Relentless 7
Ben Harper has played All Good several times and the crowd always loves him.

* "Ain't Nothing Wrong with That," by Robert Randolph and the Family Band

* "Wrong Way Feeling," by Bob Weir and Ratdog
One of my personal favorites. I recently saw him and Jeff Chimenti (keyboardist) with the Dead in DC and NY and he was awesome with them. This will be my first time seeing him with Ratdog.

* "Hidden Hand, Hidden Fist," by Sound Tribe Sector 9
Everyone loves STS9's electronic jams.

* "Garden of Eden," by Donna the Buffalo
Donna the Buffalo will bring the folkish-bluegrassy jams to All Good this year and I'm really excited to see them.

Mix Tape Thursday, 5/7/09

WTMD listeners take over the airwaves with three-to-five song sets on Thursday.

7 a.m. Mike McCann

Nels Cline is an incredible guitarist, as well as a wonderful composer of many different types of music. I think he deserves attention, and playing this mix tape on WTMD would be a great start.

And I can guarantee you will get many 'thank yous' for introducing your listeners to this incredible music.

* "Lowered Boom," by The Nels Cline Singers
* "Chi Cacoan," by Nels Cline
* "Progression," by Nels Cline

9 a.m. Glenn Carswell

Summertime!

* "Toe Jam," by The BPA
* "Pressure Drop," by Toots and the Maytals
* "Freeker the Speaker," by Keller Williams
* "Shakedown Street," by Grateful Dead
* "Whoever You Are," by Geggy Tah

11 a.m. Jack Livingston

* "Bird on a Wire," by k.d. lang
A cool Canadian beatitude.

* "Chelsea Hotel #2," by Rufus Wainwright
An angst-filled, soaring take on sleaze and love.

* "I'm Your Man," by Nick Cave
Nick Cave owns this song.

* "The Traitor," by Martha Wainwright
She is so in tune with Leonard Cohen's phrasing.

* "I Can't Forget," by Jarvis Cocker
Jarvis shows us the playful yet pained irony of the song.

1 p.m. Katie Dworak

The human body is composed of approximately 60% water or something like that...
About 75%-ish of the earth's surface is covered in water...
My glass is half full of delicious, refreshing tap water...
And these songs that somehow pertain to or perhaps simply mention water in some way shape or form are 100% super :)

* "Valerie," by Amy Winehouse
* "Under the Weather," by KT Tunstall
* "Mighty Storm," by The Duhks
* "Once in a Lifetime," by Talking Heads
* "Purple Rain," by Prince
* "International Dateline," by Ladytron

5 p.m. Corrie Byrne

Looks like its going to be rainy for the next couple days. I particularly like these songs because they’re songs from beloved artists but aren’t usually played on the radio. Thanks so much for allowing listeners to have control over what gets played!!!

* "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head," by Ben Folds Five
* "I Know the Reason," by Carbon Leaf
* "Steeples," by Dispatch
* "Aqueous Transmission" by Incubus

7 p.m. Tiernan Flaherty

I wanted the lyric that references Cohen and inspired the quote of the mix tape and a favorite from Mr. Leonard himself to bookend my choices with 3 of his greatest disciples and some of their best songs in between.

* "Pennyroyal Tea," by Nirvana
* "Katy Song," by Red House Painters
* "The Sorrowful Wife," by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
* "I See a Darkness," by Bonnie "Prince" Billy
* "Avalanche," by Leonard Cohen

"Baltimore" Live at Cherry Hill Elementary

Last summer, WTMD's Baltimore Unsigned challenged Americana singer-songwriter Caleb Stine and hip-hop artist Saleem to write four songs in six weeks. The unlikely collaboration yielded an incredible friendship and a solid full-length album, Outgrown These Walls. (Read the City Paper review.)

When Caleb and Saleem debuted "Baltimore" at a live taping at the 8 x 10 in July 2008, it was a revelation. Saleem's complex portrait of the city with Caleb's simple refrain, "I've got a dollar in my pocket and it's only Wednesday," moved more than a few people to shed a tear.

Saleem recently visited a Baltimore City elementary school to discuss his life as a musician. The kids had studied the song before the visit, and when they pick up the refrain, it's a celebration--and a testament to the power of music.

What Defines a Great Recording Artist?

It's relatively easy to rattle off a list of great songs or albums, but what defines a great recording artist? Is it record sales? #1 songs? A showcase night on American Idol?

Producer Brian Eno once noted, The Velvet Underground never sold a lot of records, but everyone who bought one went on to form a band.

Ani DiFranco, on the other hand, sells a lot of records. But she does it on her own terms. DiFranco founded Righteous Babe, an independent label, long before the Internet was a series of tubes while reimagining an artists' business model--and redefining the role of the singer-songwriter--for the MySpace generation.

Bands such as the Grateful Dead and Phish reinvented their songs and set lists every night, creating a new concert experience for fiercely loyal fans and introducing a series of live albums and bootlegs that, arguably, are just as important as their studio work.

Jeff Buckley is fondly remembered for one amazing album. And, like a lot of artists who died too young, a catalog of posthumous releases (and an assembly line of vocal imitators) has tried to fill the void.

George Clinton receives royalties every time someone samples Parliament-Funkadelic. When does he ever get credit for the originals?

Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits are enjoying a renaissance in the twilight of their careers. They never experienced the mass adulation (and scorn) as when Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar, but where would popular music be without Various Positions or Rain Dogs?

Are younger songwriters like Jack White and Ryan Adams so prolific--with so many incarnations--that it's hard to identify a career-defining album?

How many of these artists qualify as the Greatest Artists of All Time?

That's up to you to decide.
