1 – 200 of 331 Newer› Newest»3 doors down? Britney Spears? really? was this just supposed to be 897 bands that we could name? I think someone missed the part about "greatest"
Motley Crue already....c'mon!!
I do love the start of the countdowns! There are so many "YouGottabekiddingme" artists.
My bet is the Brit. Fans recognized her impact on American Culture (good and bad) and her recent comeback album that has received both positive press and big sales.
You know, it's kind of funny, our culture really loves to take a tragic figure and raise the image above the person's ability to meet those expectations. Now,if like Maryln and DiMaggio---I wonder what would happen if Brittany started dating Michael Phelps!
Based on Steve's comment, I seriously hope we do not see Miley Cyrus on this list!
I would have preferred a separation between "bands" and "single artists." I think you could have had a separate countdown for best bands. I found this countdown confusing.
I am loving it! I wish I had the radio on for "Games People Play". Love me some Alan Parsons Project.
Fingers are crossed for my votes. :)
Whosoever voted for 3 Doors Down should no longer be allowed to listen to music let alone WTMD. My confidence in people has been severely shaken here today.
I think it's hilarious that Britney Spears made the list! It would be nice to know how many people voted for each artist.
It could have been only one person that voted for Spears.
BAck to the UK for Thin Lizzy?
Pleeeeaase! Lizzy is IRISH!
I wish they'd show how many votes each artist got.
For whoever voted for Dead Milkmen --- bless you.
Don't think there will be 855 better than Bon Iver!
Greatest certainly has lost is value: Al DiMeola- yes; Britney Spears- NFW!!!
I feel bad for Al Dimiola. The only one below Brittney.
How many votes did Britney Spears get?
Um...I'm no Britney fan but would listen to her over William Shatner (3814) anyday.
The fact that Bon Iver and LCD Soundsystem not to mention a few other really good bands are somehow below Staind really disturbs me. I personally have not been able to handle listening to WTMD since this thing has been going on. I hope the top 200 are worth hearing...
Hi Anon!
I know what you mean--I'm always surprised by where the artists fall in the list. That's what happens when hundreds of people are involved in the process.
I hope you don't tune out! You might miss something you'd want to hear or something that will get under your skin too!
That's really the point of these countdowns--to get our listeners talking, debating, thinking about not just what the artist is all about, but how other people are thinking as well.
We hear a lot about fights nearly breaking out among folks debating the list! Now, don't go that far! But it's always fun to measure our own thinking against other folks!
Oh come on, that's the best you can do to represent The Get Up Kids, a Cure cover? ???
Taking Back Sunday was a great surprise - thanks!
I find it ammusing that there are comments on here complaining about a countdown that asks its listeners a question with a subjective answer. We haven't broken the top 200 yet so I will not be suprised by anything I see on the list. As much as I am not a fan of Britney spears or 3 doors down I recognize they are multi-platinum artists so somebody must like them.
Bocephus!!!
Slickee Boys!? Nice! Great tune, brings back good memories and local pride.
Britney is very acceptable if Sonny & Cher are on the list, (at least they sold more records then Yoko Ono).
beetreemd --- I think I may have sold more records than Yoko Ono.
The presence of Britney Spears, Yoko Ono and (especially) William Shatner leads me to wonder if the voting was pranked. Waiting for Rick Astley to hit in 5,4, 3, 2...
I think WTMD is trying to save themselves some embarrassment by not publishing the vote count, but even without seeing it I'm willing to bet that until we get to the top 100 or so artists we're dealing with very small number statistics so the ranking is pretty meaningless.
I think I'm the only one who voted for Candlebox and they are 894. I really want to see the number of votes each artist received.
Tyler, I think you may be right. Lil Wayne?? There may have been some pranking involved, or at least some people not taking the vote very seriously. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Rick now. It would only be fitting.
over a decade after that Cher song, people are still putting that annoying effect on the vocals. Way to go, Lil'Wayne. Guess we have hundreds more to go before there is someone who got more than 3 votes.
I saw Lil'Wayne's name on the list and something inside me died a little bit... it might have been my faith in mankind.
I had the sad experience of seeing him "perform" at Virgin Festival last year and, in my opinion (for any silly folk who actually like Lil'Wayne, please note that I said "in my opinion"), he barely deserves to be called a musician. And supposedly, he now wants to try his hand at acting...
Truly a sign of the nearing apocalypse...
How can you only play ONE motorhead song? AND THEN not even play eat the rich. Plus, given the length of op ivy songs, 3 would have rocked. I am a little worried that Britney will be on the list and Slayer will not be. Which would make me sad.
I wonder if I was the only one that put Steeleye Span. They are not on the list yet. Does that mean they will be higher up in the list? I would hope they would rate higher than Brittany Spears and William Shatner!
I love this. I love that WTMD has the guts to play them as they fall.
I think that anyone who is criticizing any of the picks is missing the point.
After listening exclusively to WTMD, I'm LOVING listening to these songs that I never hear. It's a great summer break! So what, it's 1 Britney or Lil wayne song along with some really good stuff you don't hear on WTMD too often. Everyone has their faves that they listen to all the time, it's good to hear something different! I find the mix intriguing, you never know what's going to be next!
As much as I love lists and countdowns I find this one to be frustrating mainly because of the lack of era or musical style boundaries.
Here is my "list" of improvements for next time:
1) Don't ask us to compare apples to oranges: Why even try to compare artists like Glen Miller and Ella Fitzgerald with bands the Black Eyed Peas, Pearl Jam, Rusted Root etc.? Compare blues to blues, rock to rock etc. Or say, last 20 years etc.
2. Instead of greatest artists why not make it favorite artists? This is gonna be a popularity contest anyway.
3. If you are counting down 897 artists, why did we only get to pick 15 of them? It was hard trying to decide to choose the obvious big boys (Rolling Stones etc.) or less known yet influential bands. It would be a calculation nightmare for you guys but let the listeners choose as many as they want (up to 897).
Love the station!
Sia, Zero 7 (a derivation of Sia), and Mazzey Star...good ones! I was listening yesterday and was excited to hear Frente. When I voted I included some bands/artists that I felt are iconic [as long as they are talented as well (counterexample=Brit Spears)] but I also voted for artists who just came to mind as my favorites based on experiences with their music at certain times in life. The suggestion when voting was to keep this last point in mind. That said, maybe someone had a profound experience while listening to Yoko?
Diggin the Yonder (40 miles, 2 hits) keep passing it around! Memories of heading out to Telluride for some festivariantating ;-)
Spinal Tap was not a real band!!
Britney Spears? Lil Wayne? Panic at the Disco? My chemical Romance? Black Eyed peas? Mariah Carey? Paramore? Taking back Sunday?...ect. I'm surprised that all these artists are on the list. But I can see where you're coming from. There's only so many artists out there, let alone good ones. To all those people who are complaining about the list, be thankful these artists are towards the top. [Go Spinal tap! I loved that movie =D ]
I should've posted this yesterday - I was driving to work thinking that whomever voted for "Girl Talk" may have meant the DJ Greg Gillis version, not the uninteresting jazz group that did get played.
This isn't the "897 Greatest Real Bands" countdown, it's the "897 Greatest Artists" countdown. Did they write songs? Do they perform them? What makes a band a "real" band? Yes, they are fictional characters that the actors played, but those actors are actually doing concerts right now where they perform those songs. I think that qualifies them as "artists" in some respect. What about Tenacious D? Flight of the Conchords? Are they not "real" bands?
This is a listening all day kind of thing. Can't stop!! Thank you!!!
The fact the Faith No More fell this low on the list is the reason that their reunion tour is in Europe and not America.
Well, we obviously still have the likes of BeeGees and ABBA yet to come, but anyone want to lay odds on Men w/o Hats or Flock of Seagulls?
Please put this in perspective.
this is marketing campaign by a radio station to boost listeners. It is working great, and I congratulate Steve Y and the others on good job. You've got people talking so they must be listening.
Aw man, I can't believe Derek Trucks is so high up on the list! i was thinking at least top 100 or 200. Top 300 at the most... That's OK, as long as it's just Derek, and not the whole Allman Brothers Band, they deserve a spot in the top 50, at the least.
This is such an interesting countdown - just like best songs and albums of all time that they have done the past couple years. Its fun to vote and see where your bands place, and to see bands that you haven't heard of in years resurface. Even though I am not a fan of some of the artists it doesn't mean that they don't have their own place in music history. Keep it going!!!
You are right about faith no more. Also why only one song? what is the criteria for how many songs an artists gets?
Yesterday I heard Op Ivy on WTMD. Today I heard Pantera. KEEP IT UP! It's great to hear stuff I love on a station I would never expect to hear it on.
Anon "Spinal Tap is not a real band"
Then how do you explain the one city world tour they are on June 30th at Wembley.
I cant believe the blood brothers actually made it. it brings a tear to my eye.
I love this count down. We ae hearing such an eclectic mix of artists. Anyone taking bets on who the top ten are? Keep up the great work. Wish we could put all these songs on something I could play when I can't pick up your station. Glad Brittany was at the very bottom of the list!
wish i could listen to this at work. instead i'm just refreshing the page repeatedly. :)
was so happy to hear fruvous on my way to work yesterday. what fun! keep up the great work! :)
What a station! Anything goes on this countdown. It's not only Great radio for music people; it's great music for radio people too!
Keep up the good work, WTMD.
Barry Manilow is a good example of music for radio people - back in the day.
Being a true rock and roller and rock music aficianado, I don't mind my tastes being "challenged" by the likes of Manilow, B. Spears and Shatner. It's all good.
Yay Ringo gets his own spot! suprising somewhat. But now I can expect John, Paul, and George too. Hopefully lower on the list
Only radio station I can listen to. Only non-corporate station that plays music that is not all mainstream. I am surprised at least once a day by artists and songs they play. Keep it up 89.7
Only radio station I can listen to, playing all types of music, from jazz and hip-hop to indie rock and blues to country and classic rock. Keep it up 89.7!
Those are two great Sugar songs, but I really coulda used "Gee Angel" right about now.
On the one hand, the variety is great, and I'm hearing lots of artists I never heard before. On the other, Slayer isn't exactly 'worksafe'. Radio off.
Thanks for having the integrity to play Raining Blood, especially in the middle of the workday. That's the kind of thing that makes WTMD a truly great station.
It is criminal how underrated Teenage Fanclub are.
I really was surprised driving home yesterday. I thought Burt Bacharach had died and they were playing a tribute but it turns out it was Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass playing what I thought was BJ Thomas. It was really interesting and I went home and downloaded it. I scanned the list and it does seem kind of weird, the breadth of the artists. I'll bet many had only one vote and somebody else ranked them. TMD has been less appealing recently. It's probably me, I'm finding the effeminate band selections boring. Not that it's bad, it just strike me as wimpy.
Crack The Sky!!!!
Good to see Lowen & Navarro on the countdown but would have thought they'd be ranked a little higher as I know they have a fairly strong following in this area. Matter of fact, we are going to see them tonight at Berchmere in DC area. WTMD is a GREAT radio station. I've listened intently to the other major countdowns that the station has done over the past few years, but I think in many subtle ways this is the best one yet, as you hear so many different kinds of music and you simply never know what you will hear next - it could be a song and artist you've never heard before, or it could be one of your most favorite songs of all time. And the real beauty is, either way, you know that your "ears" are the real winner and that has a direct affect on your attitude. Very good therapy, at a time when we all could use some. GO WTMD GO!
Publicity gimmick? Maybe. Pre-fundraising listener recruitment? Perhaps. Britney Spears? Oh well. However on what other station in the area, or the east coast (there are a few perhaps) are you going to hear a kick a** Slayer track followed by India Arie. I'm no Slayer fan but heck yeah!, this is great variety. The Minutemen and Toto is the same 1/2 hour. Does it get better?
And as for Mylie Cyrus if she, or her alter ego Hannah Montana, make the list, lets just hope she is followed by Suicidal Tendencies. 'I Saw Your Mommy' preferably.
What a great idea! As I'm listening, it just keeps getting better and better... duh... that's what is supposed to happen. But you guys hit it out of the park! I love the 897 concept too.
Obviously this list isn't a numerical top 897 artists of all time but the can you name 897 artists countdown. Lemme guess what number one will be, John Lennon?
To Justin
Is that the criteria that makes a real band? If people will come out and see them?
Spinal Tap is now and always has been a satirical commentary of the metal bands of the 80's. They are a fictional band.
I'm not saying I don't love them, because "This is Spinal Tap" is in my top 20 list of movies, but my love of the movie doesn't make them real.
Finally some Sleater-Kinney on WTMD.
Anon,
What's the difference between theatrics on stage and theatrics in front of a camera? Tenacious D or Gwar for example focus on stage performances. Spinal Tap has 3 "real" albums and perform live as a band for thousands of people. Its a selling gimmick but I don't think that constitutes them as not being a real band.
What about Hannah Montana? Started as a TV series and is now a National touring act?
on a sidenote I can't believe there is a radio station that would follow up Judy Garland with 2pac.
Go WTMD.
how is george michael more influential than builtospill...?
Dispatch was lower down than whitney Houston? how in the world did THAT happen!!!??
To Justin,
Josie and the Pussycats, The Monkeys, The Partridge Family. All of these were fake bands that toured. Like Spinal Tap
I would have to say the difference in the bands you mentioned (other than Hannah Montana which I'm just going to ignore because I can't stand the show) and Spinal Tap is origins. Tenacious D and GWAR (awesome band) were always bands. Their stage theatrics were just a side note.
Josie and the Pussycats, The Monkeys, The Partridge Family. All of these were fake bands that toured. Like Spinal Tap.
2pac got more votes than Gov't Mule, Cracker, Derek Trucks, and a whole lot of other GREAT bands?? How did that happen???
...And let's not forget about Blues Traveler, Roger Waters, Ian Anderson, Crack the Sky... All somehow beaten by 2pac =[
The list so far is very interesting with some unusual picks like Bing Crosby, Edith Piaf, and Charlie Parker. All great artists, but not what I was thinking of when I voted. The only true disappointment is seeing Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, and the Four Tops all in the 480s. I shouldn't complain because I didn't vote for any of them (only 15 picks and I just took names off the top of my head). Domino and Diddley were true pioneers in the 50s. I haven't seen Professor Longhair yet. I wonder...
Only two of my picks played thus far. Bring on the Power of Mojo Nixon!
Hey Moonman.
857. The Dead Milkmen
615. The Black Crowes
425. Lisa Loeb
No Mojo Nixon.
This list could use some fixin'
I can't believe we're still talking about this "fake" band/real band thing.
First off....this isn't a "bands" countdown. It's an "artists" countdown. I'd say there's some artistic merit to a comedic band, fictional or not.
Partridge family: Yes, fake. Most of the "family" on the show didn't even play or perform.
Monkeys: I'd give them legit status. They may have been brought together for a tv series, but they are all actual musicians and have written, recorded, and toured.
Josie and the Pussycats: um, a cartoon??? Or are we talking about the movie? Either way...not even close.
As for Spinal Tap...just because they are posing as characters means they can't be considered a "real" band? Clearly, they are not "real" people, but, I think they can be considered a band. Plenty of "real" bands go by stage names or create a stage persona.
But again, I go back to my original point. ARTISTS. Not bands. That's what I'm really loving about this countdown. It completely challenges what you usually think of for these countdowns.
I can't believe Garth Brooks and System of a Down beat out Morcheeba, J.J. Cale, and Booker T. and MGs.
How can you be surprised by Garth Brooks being more popular than Morcheeba. I'm surprised he didn't make top 100. I didn't vote for him though.

So Elvis wasn't in the top 100 album or singles countdown. Is there any way he doesn't make the top 30 artists?
First off, please, it's Monkees, not Monkeys. Mike Nesmith; excellent songwriter (he wrote Different Drum), producer, and musician. Peter played at least six instruments expertly, including the harp. Micky was an amazing singer. Check out Goin' Down on Youtube. Davey--let's just leave it at that. They became a real band, not a fake band, because they practiced hard and wanted to be a real band. They never tried to dupe anyone.
I do want to commend WTMD for the obvious hours and hours of work you put into this. I've learned so much--the research alone is well worth the listen, and it must have been extremely difficult to time this all down with your other programming and fundraising. Kudos! Just enjoy--at least it's got people talking and reminiscing!
I would like to think that Elvis would make the Top 10, but that is the fantasy of a 56 year old guy who idolized him as a kid & still thinks he's one of the most imortant artists of the last 100 years, right there with Dylan & The Beatles. In fact, doubt there would have BEEN Dylan & The Beatles without Elvis! And where will Chuck berry place?
Zappa will be 1
Y'all just killed me on the way to school tonight. Phil Ochs to Notorious B.I.G. to the Monkees to Kanye??? I love surprises like this. Thank you!
I hope they keep playing more than 1 song from each artist...
Here is my problem!
Weird Al just before Incubus, come on, and above many many superior artist like Boston, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and more other than that I'm satisfied.
...And 311
Well look at that, the Monkees made the countdown. And I know it's "Monkees" it was just a typo.
After seeing some very surprising artists make this list I started thinking about some of the different connotations of "greatest" people might be applying to their lists:
- influential
- pioneering
- popular
- personal enjoyability (cuz sometimes you just really dig someone)
I used the 4th interpretation and listed the artists to which I spend the most time listening, not necessarily those artists I think have the most historic significance or "transcend genres even as they invent them" (to quote Bender on Beck).
I hate a lot of the artists listed, think a lot of ones I like/love deserve higher placing, but so what? This list is great fun. Bach, the Monkees, Gogol Bordello, Dolly Parton -- what more could you ask for? (Besides more hip hop and r&b and Drive-By Truckers in the top 150.)
Bach beats out Beethoven? Seriously? That makes this whole thing a joke.
comeon people, just reading some of these comments makes me realize how people are so opinionated, i don't like it so it must suck because only my opinion counts. music is music, all is good doesn't matter if its b spears or modest mouse.
I haven't heard any early Peter Buck yet.
I find it hard to believe that Bach beating Beethoven by 15 positions totally invalidates the entire countdown. If you think about it, I'm sure artists that are only separated by about 10-20 positions don't have a huge difference in vote count.
On the same note, has anyone else noticed how many similar artists seem to fall around the same spots? I imagine it has to be because there's a certain number of people that like a certain genre that participated, and so two extremely similar artists probably receive similar numbers of votes. So, for the Bach case, maybe 5 or 10 extra people listed Bach and not Beethoven.
Dan:
I noticed that too, especially early in the countdown, and I think that WTMD was just taking the liberty of grouping similar artists who got the same number of votes.
And I agree that the vote difference between artists separated by even 25 ranks at this point probably are only separated by a couple votes. I really, really wish WTMD would publish the vote count so we could play around with the statistics and make some plots.
It seems to me that the Bach vs. Beethoven comment was meant to be sarcastic.
My suspicion with this list is that more current artists seem to be showing up higher in the list, perhaps it is that people when voting remembered them more, due to being more current, and therefore more in the voters memory.
There is no way for example Regina Spektor (while very good) @ 310, beats Graham Parker @ 358. That makes absolutely no sense... If for no other reason than length of time as an artist, number of albums sold, etc...
There are many others I could use as examples as well. Anyhow, it has been an interesting listen to say the least.
The Bach - Beethoven comment was pure sarcasm. Lighten up people. This is supposed to be fun. The diversity of music is what makes WTMD so great.
And opionions are opinions. Everybody is entitled to their own and anyone critical of that is close-minded.
My opinion of course.
Is anybody suspicious of the countdown at all?
I am feeling that it really is a programming generated countdown being passed off as a listener-driven-supported one...
I am tremendously enjoying it, but alot of the aspect of the positions of some artist to others is a bit laughable.
I know people will say it is of opinion that I am motivated to write this.
Why won't they let us know the vote counts of each of these artists...HHMMMM.
The countdown is fun! It's an eclectic mix, to say the least! I never know what artist will be next.
Maybe there are some strange inclusions on the list, but who cares? These lists are always arbitrary things anyway.
Let's just enjoy the bizarre hodgepodge.
Hey, stop complaining!
Somebody has to take the time to count up all those votes.
Next year, instead of whining, why don't YOU volunteer at the station and help them do the talley.
I'll put Live (846), Collective Soul (844) and Soul Asylum (841) up against the three weakest acts/artists that appear in the top 10. Suggestion for those intending to use the list as a way of turning on to new music, start at the end!
At first I was very cynical regarding the countdown but I decided to give it a chance and have really enjoyed the broad spectrum of artists represented. Making a list of the greatest 897 artists has got to be a daunting task. Throughout the countdown I've heard so many songs that made me stop and say "oh yeah, i forgot about them... great band!" and have revisited artists I've overlooked or forgotten. Way to go WTMD
The countdown is awesome - love all the different genres of music. Keep up the good work.
we're inside the top 200 and well over 100 rock and roll hall o' famers not played yet.
The squeeze play is on.
OK, one of my picks finally appeared: Linda Ronstadt. I expected her to place higher, but then she has gone into so many genres since the 70s, when she was the number one female vocalist. She and Emmylou Harris are my favorite singers, White Girl Division. What a voice!
Of course not everyone is going to agree but isn't that the great thing about art and music? I enjoy reading the list and thinking , I used to love that band/song. I will say, I'm glad Bad Brains made it at a respectable level.
This countdown sure has people talking. I guess I should jump in.
Honestly, I have not listened that much...I've tried. I did not become a member to hear the majority of the songs that have been played so far (White Christmas? I'm no Bing Crosby expert, but he has other songs in addition to playing Christmas music in June), but I am a member because they ARE playing these songs. It is a testament to the station that they are playing the artists that the people actually voted for, no matter how far off the "norm" they venture. It would have been pretty easy to make this list a lot more "listenable" had they tailored it to what they usually play, but they didn't..they stayed true to the spirit of the countdown..no matter how painful of a decision it was.
If ever this is attempted again, I'd ask to see the entire list, but only hear the Top100 (or Top 89.7). A list this aggressive is bound to have a few "WTF" moments. 897 ARTISTS (not songs) is a lot. I'm almost surprised there were 897 unique entries. (Hint: WTMD..how many were there?) I'd have to think it was not many more than 897...I'd be willing to bet that the 1st hundred or so on the list were in the 1-2 Vote Range.
I do appreciate the On Air Personalities that are taking the time to research the Artists and provide information that I may never know otherwise.
Thanks!
On Sunday, I was driving through Silver Spring to see my mother. I pulled up next to a woman who, like me, had a WTMD bumper sticker on her car. I'm used to seeing these around Towson and Baltimore, but in Silver Spring, it made me feel I had a bond with this woman as strong as if I'd known her for years. I was listening to the countdown and wondering if she was, too. It was a hot day and her window was open. Her arm was hanging out the driver's side window. All of a sudden I saw her fingers tapping in perfect syncopation to the beat o— "I'm dream-ing, of a white. . . Christ-mas."
For two women in Silver Spring in the middle of June, sleighbells were ringing, and we were listening.
Surprised I see no Foreign Born, coney island, or pixies! Doubt we'll see them this high, but it would be nice!
I like that jukebox the ghost, frightened rabbit, and mgmt are not in the 800's! My friend said they would be.
I also think that many people like me are forgetting names of bands. For example, I was told I saw Bad Brains live but have no memory of it. I think those who voted really just wrote down who/what came to their mind. For those that reached real hard into their internal databases, great work but for some of us oldtimers who have been listening to music for years, it has to be earth moving for us to remember them. Great work TMD!
Seeing how this voting went shows us clearly how we ended up with a socialist for President.
Conner Oberst ahead of The Jam? I can't stand this anymore. Good luck y'all with the rest of the countdown. I should've moved to France like I threatened to do if George II got reelected.
When is this countdown thing going to be over? I literally can not wait until you get back to playing real music again. I miss the 5-o-clock shadow! Also, I know that you guys are in trouble financially, but interrupting the music every 5 seconds to beg for money is worse than commercial radio. It's like the pledge drive 24/7! As a WTMD member, I'm begging, please bring back the wtmd I know and love!
192. Etta James
191. Pete Townsend
190. Buddy Guy
189. John Hiatt
Wow. What a great string of artists. Should be top 10 though. All but two of my choices are gone now.
One has got to be top 50 (The Band) and one has no chance (Scorpions).
I've been in a million who's better - Harry Chapin or Dr. Dre debates. Now we know.
Boo to you for putting Van Halen's Panama in my head from yesterday to now. I am deducting $5 from my intended donation. Just kidding. Fun to see what fellow weirdos like. ;)
Very ignorant to have Wu-tang that low and play Shimmy Ya as their song as that was a single off of ODB's record may he rest in peace.
I was jamming to some Black Sabbath when, all of a sudden, some God channel cuts in. Interference or something more???
Absolutely amazing. Tribe and De La didn't even crack 100. They're arguably two of the greatest Hip-Hop groups of all time.
Charlie Parker at 486? This is very interesting. Who can possibly be in 100-1.
What a relief; once the list got to the 300s, I didn't think I'd see Captain Beefheart show up! Still waiting on Frank Zappa, Ella Fitzgerald, Koji Kondo, Harry-Gregson Williams, and of course, me!
What I want to know is: how did they get recordings of Bach and Beethoven? Didn't they both die before the phonograph was invented?
My hats off to those who put these guys in their lists. I wouldn't have thought of that. And hats off to WTMD for playing them.
Also, it's good to hear WTMD getting with the program. I mean, on other stations, I can hear "Don't Stop Believing" at least once a day.
Well, now the list is getting annoying. Journey over Sam Cooke, Roy Orbison, and Otis Redding? Really? Oy.
On the other hand, WTMD has got us listening and responding...
mannnn Beatles are gonna be #1 I just know it but I don't think they deserve that good of a rank
Sure I dig Beethoven and Bach but was surprised to see them make the list as I consider them more or less an oldies act.
It's gotta be at least 35-40 years since either has put out anything new.
Also, to the poster mentioning the countless discussions between who is better, Harry Chapin or Dr Dre, it's really no contest. Dr Dre is way more talented. Do you know how hard it must have been to write and record while going to medical school?! All Harry did was drive a taxi.
Renaissance, Graham Parker, Sigur Ros!!! Well done!!!
But where is Steve Forbert??
Some people are taking this waaaaaaay too seriously! It's based on listener tastes and opinions, okay? It's not supposed to be a scholarly treatise or even a representative sample. No one's going to agree with all the results. It's fun to see who ends up where.
You are seriously saying that The Beatles don't deserve to be #1 if they are!
I think they will be...They were my #1.
I would bet that at least 75% of the artist in this countdown would state that The Beatles are an influence of theirs...Then it shouold only make sense for them to be very, very high in the countdown if not #1!
Thanks Jim, I agree. I do think some people voted for some of these as a joke though.
to anonymous..I would rather listen to Steve and Amy trying to make an honest dollar for WTMD than live every minute knowing the government is stealing from me all the time. Thanks WTMD for making my world a little better.LesterBachran
As stated before, the countdown is based on each listner's list as their favorite music. I hope everyone is having as much fun as I am singing along to the countdown and wondering what is next. Would it help if the countdown was renamed to Favorite Artists?
Wha...? Wheezer and Journey ahead of Carole King and John Hiatt?
The beatles really should get #1, the stones could push them out though. Whatever, i like them both =)
I'm really surprised A-Ha wasn't higher in the list.
Is this a countdown of people's favorite artists or the Greatest Artists of All Time? To me there is a big difference. During today's show Amy said she voted for her favorite artists. I voted for what I truly believe are the greatest artists of all time. I'm curious how other people approached it?
BTW, Beatles were on the top of my list. Stones were close. Miley Cyrus was *not* on my list.
When exactly will the number one artist be revealed?
where the hell is Arcade Fire??
No, it wouldn't help if the countdown was renamed to Favorite Artists! If that's what it was supposed to be, then it should have been named that in the first place. But it wasn't. It was named Greatest Artists of All Time. And that's what it should be!!
jb3, I wouldn't be surprised to see Elvis in the top 20. But by your logic you also have to consider all the "artists without whom there would be no Elvis" and where they are placing in the countdown if at all!
No doubt we'll see the Big 5 British rockers jockeying for top spots in the top 10: The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Floyd, and Zeppelin. Of course Dylan will be there, Springsteen. Who else? What non-geezers will break in?
As someone said, the Beatles are an influence for almost everybody on the list who comes after them chronologically. At the symphony last week when Hilary Hahn was playing Jennifer Higdon's violin concerto, Higdon said in the Q & A afterward that George Harrison was a notable influence on her in the piece.
I think that this list shows the true eclectic nature of both the station and the listeners who listen and voted, as well as the broad demographic that listens. My old (57) soul was delighted to tune in yesterday and hear the Foo Fighters followed by Patsy Cline. there is something for everyone and a lot for everyone who appreciates what is good, cool and influencial. I love this!!
No Wilco yet....can't wait to see where they fall.
This is where it REALLY gets good, the final 100, the cream of the crop.
to Jason - I'm with you, "Where's Wilco?"
There are still so many great bands that have yet to be mentioned. Where will they place?
What a great station! All the best in reaching the $$ goal! You've got my support!!
Lenny Kravitz is either in the top 100 or not on the list at all. I find either answer surprising.
Same can be said for Jewel, Camper van Beethoven, Scorpions, Jeff Buckley, who else?
The Clash had better be #1. The only artist I'd accept in that coveted position is Rick Astley.
Also on list still or not at all:
The Offspring, LL Cool J, Alice Cooper, The Stooges, Stevie Ray Vaughn
Where's Juice Newton?!?!
Seriously, I agree with the Beatles discussion...I love the Stones, Dylan, and others but, seriously, the Beatles will/should be #1.
No other band has influenced so many...and I have to believe no other artist cracked the Top 15 with the frequency and regularity that this band did...
still enjoying! wish ani was higher up, but what do you do. i'm still holding out hope for ozomatli - the greatest live act i ever saw - but maybe they just aren't big enough on the east coast yet. i don't expect to see them in the top 90, although you never know!
p.s.: spinal tap is a real band. i just saw them perform. what a great bunch of guys. :)
oh, and by the way, it's really not necessary to play four death cab for cutie songs. i realize you have your indie cred to think about, but please. the ultimate hyped hipster band. they're fine, but don't show your cards so much! we don't have time for four songs from every artist from now on.
Muse should have done so much better than #249. *sigh* And definitely songs besides something off of Black Holes and REvelations.
oh, and i hope jump, little children shows up, too
Heck, I hope that for the last 50 or so they give a whole hour to each artist...showcasng their range maybe(if they have range as an artist).
Extend this thing a week longer!
Nice to see that Wishbone Ash made the list. One of my all-time favorite bands and still going strong. Saw them at Ramshead last year. Wish that WTMD would play them more often.
Disappointed that Anders Osbourne didn't make the list (I'm assuming).
But The Meters have to make it, right?
Muddy Waters at #92 & Chuck Berry at #88- what is this world coming to? The King of the electric blues & the Father of rock! Both should have come in much further down the line!
The Decemberists ranked HIGHER than Richard Thompson? I really like the band, but honestly, I don't think Colin Meloy would agree with this...Ah...primacy and recency effects...
Come on, Madonna ahead of Lou Reed? I've lost all faith.
Speaking of Lou Reed, John Cale didn't even make the list. That makes me incredibly sad.
Anonymous Guys: I share your frustration about Lou Reed & John Cale (Lou was in my 15!), but we can console ourselves with the thought that the Velvet Underground will place MUCH further down the line!(Of course, I thought that about Muddy Waters & Chuck Berry, too!)
What kind of world are we living in??! Culture Club beats out Joss Stone?!?!?! George Michael beats The Cowboy Junkies?! This is nuts...
I go to Carver which is right in Towson and the Photo teacher there always plays WTMD. I'm kinda disappointed to see that I walked in to see see two of my friends just after the B-52's had played, I keep missing some of my favorite artists! But its okay because after that Cake, ELO, and Modest Mouse played.
Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney, George Harrison... all done by #80... I call shenanigans.
Michael Jackson beats Paul McCartney! That would drive Paul wild!
I think Bob Dylan will be #1. Frank Zappa should be in the top 5.
Kid Rock is at 145. This confuses me.
Is his music really any good at all? Has he been influential in some way that I am completely unaware of? Last I checked, the only thing he is notable for is marrying Pamela Anderson a couple of times.
Sorry, I don't mean to complain! This guy just makes me sick. Hah.
BUCKETHEAD
Greatest Artists of all time - or My Favorites?
The station should make it clear which they want.
for instance I'd vote Tom Waits top of both lists.
I think Bob Dylan is one of the greatest of all time, but he doesn't make my top 10, whereas someone a lot less "GREAT" like Ultravox! does.
Rush, Yes, Alan Parsons, its nice to see the prog rockers represented. Just proudly donated a c-note, and hope to hear more musician-inclined music, whether singer-songwriter, blues, bluegrass, prog, rock, classical, jazz, or anyone with real talent.
Sun Ra and his Arkestra, Wow, I'd forgotten about him. I should of had him in somewhere between Louis Armstrong and Zappa. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. Also, thanks for playing Gershwins' Rhapsogy In Blue. Wow again. I pulled the Truck over took a break and just listened. I feel the Power of Mojo Nixon building. Get ready folks!
Wow. Os there are 65 artists better than Aretha Franklin, huh?
I am wondering if anyone voted for Sam Phillips. I love her music and she does not seem to make any list. Am I the only one who likes Martinis and Bikinis....?
We have William Shatner and Weird Al but not
Def Leppard, Offspring, Nada Surf, Linkin Park, LL Cool J, Foreigner, Robyn Hitchcock, Phish, Oingo Boingo, Cold War Kids, Stevie Ray Vaughn???
Phish arrived today, I assume SRV will be there soon but will have to beat out Janis Joplin, Yardbirds, RUN-DMC
Thanks TMD & look forward to seeing the Grateful Dead.
Also, challenge Deadheads to contribute!!
So far 79 of the 194 RockNRoll Hall of fame inductees and "early influences" have made it. With these 9 non-HOF there are only 47 spots for the remaining 115:
The Smiths
Peter Gabriel
Wilco
Dave Matthews
Radiohead
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
The Cure
Coldplay
OK, here's who I think is left, in no particular order. Besides the classic and alt rockers, Benny Goodman and Mozart are the only greats left in their respective genres that could logically top those already mentioned:
Beatles, Dylan, Lennon, Zeppelin, Floyd, Springsteen, The Who, The Police, Peter Gabriel, The Clash, Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Elvis Presley, Benny Goodman, The Kinks, Zappa, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Smiths, The Cure, R.E.M., Nirvana, Radiohead, Wilco, Bowie, Stooges, Queen, Neil Young, CSN(Y), Stevie Wonder, Traffic, Talking Heads, Allman Brothers, Mozart, U2, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, The Band, Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Tom Petty, Alice Cooper, Van Morrison, Donovan, Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, Jeff Buckley
Oops, forgot the Rolling Stones! Scratch one of the others, though I'm surprised if they didn't all make the list!
Wolfie came in at 129, there is the space you need for Mick and the Boys.
Mozart was #129.
I would think B.B. King, The Doors, Jerry Lee Lewis would be there before
Stooges, Alice Cooper, Donovan.
But mostly I agree that it's very strange that any would be left off in favor of some of the things down the list.
Mitchell,
Thanks, I can't believe I missed that.
Brian,
Of course the Doors! D'oh! BB and Jerry Lee also should be on the list, though given where others of their ilk have landed, I wouldn't hold out too much hope...
A While back, when I was going out to see music, I saw Joni Mitchell, Laura Niro, and Minnie Riperton (she was in a band called Rotary Connection back then) over the course of a few weeks-if none of these women "make" this countdown list, their contribution to the sum total of the music we celebrate everyday on WTMD and the individual strength of their perfromances will not be diminished. thank GOD that that the "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" is a moving target that changes night to night.
I propose a new list to test anonymous' theory. The 897 worst artists. (Maybe it wold be the same list in reverse.)
Hey, Jim. Tom Petty already on the list. Pick someone else.
Maybe Tom Petty solo will beat Heartbreakers? Or are they lumped together? Still need to fit the Doors. Will CSN and CSNY both make it? Benny, Alice and Donovan may be the weakest as in being most under the radar for TMD listeners. BB might still have a chance, Brian. Only time will tell!
i can't believe how some of the comments come off as music snobbery. just because an artist may not be a "singer/song writer", doesn't mean that their music will not touch someone. i feel that if music touches someone and makes a difference in their life, then the purpose has been served. come down of your high horses and learn to appreciate all kinds of music - it's okay to like main stream. I love jamie foxx's new song ...."blame it on the a a a a a a alcohol"...fun stuff!!
#642 Don Henley, The man that sang Don Henley Must Die, probably top 10. Mojo Nixon all the way baby!
I think Billy Joel probably earns a spot. He's not my favorite, but pretty influential on the whole piano rock genre.
anything but Miley Cyrus!
Thanks to all of the WTMD staff and volunteers to keep me entertained during the first couple weeks of summer holiday. I've been listening to some really great music and discovered new artists. Thanks!!!
Jeff Buckley is 58 and Patty Griffin is 258? I've never even heard of Jeff Buckley! If you are going to do a list like this, call it something else. Not the "Greatest Artists of all time". You're just making everybody angry. Call it: "Our Listeners favorite 897 Artists" Or somthing like that. I'm going to wait until this is done before I start listening again. As long as the Beatles are number one, I'll forgive you.
Jeff Buckley is one of those artists who blew everyone's doors off when he hit the scene in the mid-90's. Innovative and unique in so many ways as a singer, songwriter, and producer. He died young after only one studio album, so we'll never know his full potential as an artist, though we will continue to see his legacy and influence resonate through today's artists. Patty Griffin, as great as she is, is one of the pack, so doesn't stand out in quite the same way. Maybe that's not fair, but that's the way it works. Better to burn out than to fade away?
Anon, how can you speak so authoritatively on this list if you've "never even heard" of Jeff Buckley! Granted he only had one studio album, but it was very influential. So much so that when WHFS first went off the air they broke into the studio to make sure his song "Last Goodbye" was the last song to play.
When wxpn did similar countdowns of 885 songs/artists/albums, Buckley had TWO songs in the top ten and finished 73rd on the list of artists.
Overall the countdown is great, and half the fun should be listeners debating whether the allman brothers are better than radiohead.
Allman Brothers better than RadioHead?...
Allman Brothers better than RadioHead???...uuhmmm...
Allman Brothers better than RadioHead????...welll, I think...
That's a stumper for sure...
Let's just say both are great, great, great, great bands!
Beatles should be #1...as for #2 and so forth...the debate will rage on an on and on and on and...
