His gift for melody, his high register voice (which, unfortunately, he later blew out) and his maverick rejection of any one style or commercial pressures endeared him to so many people; his influence, profound in songwriters such as Ron Sexsmith. He found kindred spirits in Randy Newman, Mickey Dolenz and especially John Lennon- with whom he infamously tore it up with drink and drug and heckled the Smothers Brothers.
