A close friend debated with me a few minutes ago. . .
Do you think Greatest Alblums should be titled Favorite Alblums of all time ?? . . Don't get me wrong, it's been wonderful listening to the music that everyone "choose" as their top ten; at the same time, what are the chances that we will see metal included in this list (i.e., Dream Theatre, Pantera, Sabbath, etc.,). If this a list of the Greatest Alblums shouldn't it also include all kinds of music genres?? Do you agree??

Glad to see Child is Father to the Man getting some love. great forgotten album by Al Kooper. And any Beck is good by me.

I certainly agree that a greatest album countdown should include all genres...I'm happy to say that this countdown will do that, and yes there will be some metal, and some Sabbath, you'll just have to stay tuned to find out where they appear on the list.

Thanks for listening!

Those are good questions, which I had already discussed with a couple friends. In picking my top 10, I ended up selecting the albums that meant the most to me, the ones closest to my heart. I realized this method of choosing/elimination would inevitably rule out many "classic" albums, but I felt the most content choosing that way. So, yes, the albums I picked are my favorites (from numerous genres), not necessarily the "best" of all time.

I agree that the countdown is misnamed...the misnaming is also frustrating to music fans and potentially embarrasing to the station.

You will see, no doubt, competely rediculous, critcally UN-acclaimed, records trumping true classics on the list (as we did with the song countdown).

This is inevitable, though, in a countdown based on listeners input only. Here, a 15 year old kid, who has 50 cds to his name is going to vote, (likely many times because he has much more time on his hands) and his vote will count as much as someone who has been listening, seriously, to popular, and not so popular, music for 30years. In the kid's mind, "X" lame record by the pop band of the day will be much "greater" than music that he has never heard.

This is frustrating to the listiner....this all could be cured if you ditched the "greatist" title and went with "listener deceded favorite records" or something more accurate.

First off I would like to thank everyone who leaves their name on their posts...it makes it easier to respond!

We did debate the title of the countdown. We chose "greatest" because it was the most inclusive for our listeners as well as being a bit vague. We said many times on the air that defining "greatest" was us up to you all, not us. We always say this is a listener list.

You know, what each one of thinks is a record deserving to be on the countdown is up to each person. The countdown is reflection of the group.

I would take issue with the previous poster inference that the 15 year old's choices are not as valid as the older person or that the 15 year old is more likely to stuff the ballot box more than the the older person.

I know a lot of ethical 15 year olds and, well, we can all read about unethical older folks in the paper.

I understand you not wanting to alienate younger listeners, but, generally speaking, (there are always exceptions, see the girl from Juno!), how can your average 15 year old who has been listening to the radio for two years or so possibly have as valuable a vote as someone who has been listening seriously for many years in a "Greatest Albums of ALL TIME" countdown when the child's "all time" consists of TWO YEARS or whatever.....you must get the point.....he may very well have favorite records, and his favorite records should be weighed equally to others in a countdown of "favorite records." However, this is a countdown of the "Greatest Albums of All Time," not the time of a kid born in 1993!

I retract any ballot box stuffing suggestions previously posted. We have had enough of this with the reigning President in the 2000 election....of course the 15 year old voter doesnt know much about this because he was only 7 years old when it happened! :)

Dan..

You should spend more time with 15 year olds (with their parent's supervision of course :) ).

If they listen to WTMD, they are not your typical 15 year olds. I've been hugely impressed with the variety of music younger folks find interesting. They know who the bands were in the 50s, 60s and 70s and can seperate the wheat the from the chaff.

And of course, there are a lot of 40 year olds who live on a steady diet of disco saturday night shows..

So I must disagree. All music lovers are welcome at WTMD regardless of age.

Anonymous said...

Indeed, all music lovers should be welcome here, TMD is the best station in the baltimore/dc metro area for music lovers (wpfw a close second), younger listeners should be encouraged to listen and grow as this station will challenge your musical horizons in a positve way.

We will have to agree to disagree, though, on the proper name of the countdown.....

I will say this, i am, despite my issue with the name, excited about the countdown...its great that TMD is playing several tracs from each record and even 40ish aged listeners like myself will find through the countdwon records they dont own which they will be exposed to.

Good stuff, either way.

I must admit, I had a small issue with the name of the list at first. "Greatest of all time" seemed a slight against purists as well as "true" music lovers, but I'm perfectly at home with it now. I've accepted it as being a nod to tongue and cheek. Yes, TMD is known as a great source for those serious about music, but the station also has a sense of humor and fun. Anyways, doesn't any "greatest" list basically come down to personal taste? Looking at those lists over the years, I've seen "classic, worthy" albums/artists/songs and thought, "I'd never choose that!"-even if it IS Springsteen. :)

Anonymous said...

Personally, I am frustrated by all these negative posts by impatient people. At the time I'm writing this, we are still in the 800s. Keep listening and I'm sure your favorites will pop up somewhere.

I am well aware that what I believe to be "the greatest" or "favorite" or whatever subjective word you want to put in the blank is not going to be the same as someone else's. I thank WTMD from the bottom of my heart that this 40-something poster, an ex alternative college DJ in the late 70s to early 80s, can find a community where I can still have a say, and before someone assumes all my choices were New Wave, think again. Like many WTMD listeners, I never stopped loving new music of many genres and had some contemporary albums in my top 10. I welcome other listeners' views. I do not listen to WTMD to have my own favorite tunes spit back at me day after day. That is what the IPod or CD collection is for. I listen to learn, to be educated, to be amused, to be startled, to be reminded of my youth, and yes, sometimes to be angered. For what better way to feel the love of your own favorite albums than to feel a little incensed at the place where they fall in the countdown?

Keep challenging us, WTMD. We are a varied group. Let's embrace that idea. To me, that represents the best of WTMD.

The Screaming Blue Messiahs should make the list but likely will not.

I have been enjoying the countdown.

When I was putting together my list of favorite albums, I almost put down the recording of Mahler's Symphony Number 5, as recorded by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the late 1970s. This album has always been special to me. I couldn't imagine that anyone else would have put a classical album on the countdown, so I substituted a different album. Hearing the John Coltrane album this morning, I found myself regretting not submitting the Mahler.

I'm not even fifteen, and I've listened to more music than most adults have in a lifetime. Sadly, I never voted for my favourite ten, but they'd end up being Green Day's albums, anyway. [I'm glad to see "nimrod." got some love.]

I love punk rock, and rock in general. I've listened to every genre of music, I'm sure, because my parents do. I've listened to music from the 70's, the 80's, and the 90's, not just the past few years worth of music. The older music is better, anyway. The new stuff sounds all the same. I listen to Green Day's influences; the Ramones, NOFX, the Dead Kennedys. I listen to their influences, too. Sometimes I hear a song on WTMD and I like it, and then I find the album. Then, I have a new band to listen to.

I'm not an average teenager.

I'm glad I'm able to hear more than the usual on WTMD with the countdown, though.

Hootie and the Blowfish? Are you kidding me? I like the idea of this countdown in theory, but that's just absurd.

Steve said...

I loved Hootie back in the day. To me, they are one of those bands who were much better than we think they are. I often wonder if they were the victem of over styling and over grooming from their handlers.

Though I could identify with the Izod shirts...but not the golfing stuff!

It's just beautiful to see the Guaraldi Trio "Charlie Brown Christmas" on the list. Why didn't I think of that one?

Anonymous said...

Oh my doodness! Aretha's "I Never Loved a Man..." in the six hundreds? I was afraid of stuff like this. The list is definitely a favorites list. But if I complained I'd be a hypocrite. I voted for the best stuff that I've listened to in the past year or so (aka favorites). I left off "Blood on the Tracks" and "Raw Power" because I say that I like them but I never listen to them.

Anonymous said...

Glad to see that Captain Beefheart's: Doc at Radar Station made it. It is one of the most brilliant recordings ever. Anyone someone from the station could post what two songs you played from it?

Anonymous said...

An excellent resource for checking out lists of critically acclaimed records is: acclaimedmusic.net

Its interesting to index the chosen favorites in the wtmd countdown vs the "experts"....

Anonymous said...

katie-- "A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit" and "Sue Egypt". If you go to the homepage you can access TMD's playlist. It's very extensive.

tensjed-- Thanks for the link. I've been looking at the list. Comparisons are interesting.

Ok, at this point in the countdown i have concluded that wtmd should perminantly change their play format to always play at least 3 songs off a record in a row!

Countdown aside, its just enjoyable to hear a few songs from an artist/band in a row rather than one song at a time.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Although, these are pretty darned good albums. I would say to the bossjocks at TMD, don't be afraid to play the hot hit off the album. I know you guys are trained to look past the singles but c'mon...you all DIDN'T play "Madman Across the Water". OUCH! That's got to be one of my favorite EJ songs. I know it got a lot of airplay back in the day but nobody plays it now. When "Some Girls" comes up, I hope you all have the guts to play "Beast". That's not only my favorite Stones song but it's something that they should've put on that space probe that beams out examples of human culture. Somebody help me out. What's that thing called?..

Say, what's the best album that won't make the list? I can almost bet that Etta James' "Rocks the House" and the 360's "Illuminated" won't crack it. I think I'm the only human who's ever heard those albums. Shame... They're really great musical experiences.

Anonymous said...

Joe Jackson's "Jump 'n Jive". So much fun! It's like a party in disc form. I worked for Kemp Mill Records about a hundred years ago. When we put that LP on we always sold a copy.

Anonymous said...

A great album that might be overlooked is That's the Way of the World by Earth, Wind, and Fire. Shining Star, Happy Feeling, Reasons—listen and try not to smile! I think this was the first album I ever got. I really wanted to include it in my top 10 but I just couldn't fit it in. It's hard to believe such a quality album was produced as a soundtrack for a film that has since been completely forgotten.

Maybe it will turn up; who knows. I've been pleasantly surprised by the variety and the range of decades and genres.

This is the coolest thing ever! I've heard a bunch of music that I have really enjoyed from bands I never heard of or wasn't that familiar with. And when you hear a few songs together, you get a better feel for the band or album.

Thank you WTMD. Keep up the awesome programming and keeping this blog up-to-date.

I'll be sending you a check during your membership drive! You deserve it.

In case there's any doubt, I love the countdown. Interesting juxtapositions of classic albums with recent releases. I just have a few musings...

So, if there were a bunch of albums in the top 897 that received just a few votes each, then they were several that had the same number of votes. How then were they ordered? Just curious!

Also, the music history geek in me wants to see some chronology in the list. Posting the release year of each album would have been cool. And maybe whether it was the artist's first/second/etc.. release.

Unknown said...

At number 349 my thoughts are similar to those who think this is "the coolest thing ever!" and I'm enjoying the music as it's being played three songs at a time. With 40% of the music left to be played I know we're going to hear the best yet in the coming week. Can Bob Dylan stay on top? Is Bob Marley a real contender? Who's missing from the top 100? I can't wait.

Anonymous said...

Aaarrghhh!!! I can't remember the 10 I voted for!!!! Is there any way to find that out?

Anonymous said...

AARRRGGGHHH!!! I can't really remember mine, either. I know that I should've probably added "Waiting for Columbus".

It's nice what was said about soundtracks that have more staying power than their respective movie. Aretha's "Sparkle" is like that. If you're even a little bit interested in the Queen of Soul, go to your library's website, order it and bring it home. It's a surprisingly great disc.

I criticize WTMD a lot. But that's because I love them so much. I give them ten bucks a month and I suppose I take them personal because of that. It's like criticizing your favorite child. Wouldn't you be harder on the one who might be capable of really great things?

I just hope Muddy Waters "Hard Again" places. Or Clapton's "Me and Mr. Johnson". Can you tell I love the blues? I'm a bit skeptical of all the new albums that have shown up lately. Will we say, "Yeah, that's a truly great disc," in five years?

Fantastic work. Listening in at the top of the countdown my interest was piqued, and over the following weeks I found myself choosing 89.7 in the car over my trusted CDs. I knew I was hooked today when, after 5 years of owning my current stereo receiver, I finally set up the FM antenna so I could tune in! God bless y'all, and your hard work.

I've got some quibbles about the countdown just like everyone, but what mainly bothers me is how uneven the coverage of the albums are. I've heard some albums get a single song played while others get as many as four. It also seems some are skimmed for the hits while others are dug into for the lesser known tracks.
So, what's with this? Who decides what's played, and why can't there be more consistency?

I stopped reading when I saw a John Mayer album on the list.

Steve said...

Steve,
There are several factors that influence how many and what tracks we play for each of the albums.

We have a schedule to keep so we can hit number one on the 29th and that allows for about three tracks per record--though we choose four just to have enough. But then each day we have to keep on shcedule too and some factors can change up what happens. Long traffic reports, longer songs that don't allow us to hit the top of the hour NPR news posts, the amount of underwriting and promotional annoucements, how long the intros are for each album...things like that. I think we have gotten to at least two per recrod, sometimes four.

Staff members are choosing the sets, sometimes we play the hits as well as the deeper cuts. Sometimes, we play more of the deeper ones if the "hits" are in our regular rotation. It all depends. Our goal is take the list our listeners created and choose the tracks we hope the lovers of those records would choose themselves if they were us.

That's a long way of saying we do our best and we hope we achieve the unachievable.....pleaseing 100% of our listeners 100% of the time.

I really hope more Animal Collective and Panda Bear make it on the list. Panda Bear - Young Prayer is gunna last forever as a great minimalist record.

Great job WTMD.

Greatest albums seems like it should reflect a compilation of songs that are great musically or tell a story in a superb way.

That said, I have to ask the Listeners how The Rising cannot be higher than 200-something. Whether you like Springsteen or not, that album is an incredible reflection on America's worst day since Pearl Harbor and an inspiration to rise above the darkness.

Your thoughts?

Looking forward to the remaining listings.

Saturday Night Fever?! Honestly?! UGH! I also have to agree with the previous comment about some albums getting less coverage, it has been frustrating at times. I was disappointed that Tupac Shakur only warranted playing one song from the album. I hope that this list will be cause for WTMD to re-evaluate how "diverse" they really are...they normally almost never play any jazz and certainly never any hip hop or soul. Clearly part of the listening audience wants to hear it!

I dont' care what you call it . I actually like going to my job for once because I'm glued to the radio.
I hear songs from the late sixties and can still sing every word. Bringin back so many awesome memories. And my kids remember them too!!
I'm lovin it!~!~

So far I am the most shocked about the placement of Blondie's Parallel Lines, Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, and both B 52s albums. All of these albums were seminal and most people can name and hum almost all the songs on them. I would have thought all of these would place in the top 50. However, the variety is fantastic, and no one can take my favs away from me, so I'll just enjoy the ride.

I am a 13 year old and love older music appose to newer music. I listen to 101.9 and Mix, but since I heard the countdown started up I started to listen to TMD. I've heard of it before and never given it a try, but now I like it. I don't know all of the artists, however i know most of them and I agreee with them. I love Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles. I'd love to see more Beatles albums in the top 100 and I'm sure I will. I go to Arbutus Middle and almost everybody im my classes listens to newer music, but also older music. A lot of kids like older music.

got to say i am digging the countdown. i'm disappointed when i see some albums finish as low as they have, but it's hard to argue with the awesomeness of the huge majority of these selections. especially as we get to the end, the shaky choices are long past (52nd street? "greatest"? really?).

screaming blue messiahs won't make the list, unfortunately. now if it was a list of 897 "coolest" albums, maybe. :) my vote for that list would go for timbuk3 - eden alley.

Stop you before you get into trouble... Really, Steve Y.? Too late. Some of us shop at discount stores and that saves us money so we can make monthly, automatic donations to worthy causes such as Doctors Without Borders and TMD. The other TMD jocks are professional and apolitical and it makes this beer drinkin' proletariat's skin crawl when I hear such self-righteous hints. You can apologize by playing a certain Little Feat song. I'll know you played it by running a search on your play list.
You're right. It's your job to play songs like "War". It's just not your job to comment on them.

Steve said...

Slugger,
Thanks for the note. The Wal-mart thing is a bit inside-baseball relating to the NPR coverage and such. Heck, you can find me in Target most weekends and I want to hit C-Mart soon too!

You're right, our jocks, by policy do not talk politics on the air. Our music does the talking and we hope that the music we air helps put the events of the day in perspective.

During the drives I will point that out. I think it is important to remind folks that stations like WTMD are independent stations that make decisions based on the quality of music and the writing and its relevance to current events.

I do believe strongly about how the consolidation of the commercial media has affected what we hear and see. As long time listeners will attest, I can get carried away with my beliefs. But then again, I hear from many listeners who agree and find comfort knowing their views are shared.

Steve
PS--email me the song so we can make sure to play LF for you once the 897 is completed.

Steve Y,
Sorry. I must've gotten you wrong. I was thinking about the Wal-Mart/NPR thing where they are just plain evil and they will suck every other business in the western hemisphere dry. Heck, in my home town of Rockville, Wal-Mart is banned. Don't mention them at family gatherings or some of my clan will foam at the mouth. I have a real problem with NPR, too. There are so many good things that happen yet they do not mention them. Did you listen today? Doom and gloom about housing. The market will be on fire this summer with the low interest rates.... but I digress.
Yes, we are on different sides of the fence politacally but go ahead and play "Masters of War " as much as you want. It will always be a great song. I've even been known to hum "...Make Nice". Let David Dye (by the way, I love David) interview Steve Earle and Neil Young as much as he wants and I will just plain ol' turn the radio off when I've had enough.
You are right about the corporate slavery-music-thing. TMD bypasses that. I'm not really comfortable with NPR and my tax dollars supporting it but I give as much as I can to your station financially. That's the catch-22 of artistic freedom. I think the private sector should pony-up when it comes to art, not government. Enter Jesse Helms stage left. It's such a fine line.

After reading some of these posts, there is something I need to say -- Wtmd's tag line is "radio for music lovers", not "radio for music snobs". I have a nine year old and so I listen to main steam radio as well, and have seen the Hannah Montana movie. No, you will not hear music that is changing to world, but I have to admit some of it a guilty pleasure. Sexy Back, True Friend, Rock Star, and others are fun songs! Not that I would choose to listen to it all the time, but I appreciate it for what it is.

My gawd. Wal-Mart? NPR? Chill out.

Great countdown. Best station ever. Thank you for doing this.

I'm glad the good folk at TMD are kind of milking these last few albums. I can really get a good taste of each collection. I've bought a few discs already because of the countdown and there are a lot of low-numbers that, as I hear them, I know I just have to have.

Anybody care to guess at number one?

This countdown has brought me out of my musical doldrums. I've been digging through my record collection over the last month and thinking "oh, I should have put that on my Top 10 List. Some of those include - Superdrag's Head Tripping in Every Key and Tom Wait's Nighthawks at the Diner.
Thanks TMD

Fabulous listening experience throughout the month! Thank you! My husband and I thumbed through our vinyl collection for the first time in years and are compiling a wish list of newer music.

I agree with writer who wondered at The Rising not being higher. What a powerful album on so many levels. It's not necessary to argue about the order though! It's just great to sit back and enjoy the tunes.

I foresee Joshua Tree, Blood on Tracks, Harvest, Born to Run, White Album, Graceland, Dark Side of Moon, Highway 61, some Nirvana? What am I overlooking?

I missed Rickie Lee Jones self-titled first album, Billy Bragg Talking to the Taxman, Luna Rendevous, and more Cowboy Junkies (all their albums are great). Willie Nelson & Hank Williams didn't show up did they?

What's up for next year - greatest singers, songwriters, bands, guitarists, musicians...?

Like the way some genres have crossed boundaries - but if there were more blues, jazz, country, hip hop, r & B in future playlists it'd be alright w/me.

Keep Up the Beat!

Allison said...

Jimi - WoW! Still powerful today.

I'm with ya on the "more blues" thing. If Muddy Waters doesn't crack the list I'm going to go nuts.

Unknown said...

oh, i'm guessing that you're missing revolver, rubber soul, abbey road & sgt pepper to name four obvious ones. who's next, london calling (should be #1!) and zeppelin iv also.

this is like calling a horse race, who's going to get the top choices right. plus the added benefit of discovering great new music (never heard of neutral milk hotel, but they sound like my kind of stuff).

fun times!

i'd love to see the raw scores, any chance of that?

Anonymous said...

I'm betting on Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road as #1. Not necessarily my first choice; just think one of these will be. Wow--Counting Crows at 20? It's a great album, but so many more classic ones were higher. They should fall on their knees and kiss the ground that they are in such fine company! Adam Duritz is an incredible songwriter, though.

Thanks for all of the effort put into this, WTMD, and to all the voters!

I'm one of those listeners who wishes that I had ONLY been listening for 30 years. I have watched and listened carefully as the list unfolds, and I guess I feel that favorites vs greatest is not so important... I might rearrange the list some, but your listeners have great taste.

Which is why one entry bothers me. As I write this, there are 12 left to announce. I can honestly claim at least passing knowledge of 884 of the 885 listed. Please tell me what "Neutral Milk Hotel"is.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Steve, for your considerate response to my previous comment!

Now that you're on the last day of the Fund Drive, I'm sure y'all are very busy and excited. And there are only twelve albums to go in the countdown. Being a sucker for countdowns and such, I've compiled my guess for the top 12 albums. I don't expect you to post this in the blog, but I'd love some feedback on how close I am. This took some effort to put together, but I feel good about it. If you have a chance, drop me a line at stevemathewes@gmail.com. Thanks again for being such a great station!

1. The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
3. Radiohead - OK Computer
4. U2 - The Joshua Tree
5. The Beatles - Revolver
6. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (“Zoso”)
7. The Beatles - Abbey Road
8. The Clash - London Calling
9. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
10. The Beatles - The Beatles (“The White Album”)
11. The Who - Who's Next
12. Frank Zappa - We're Only in It for the Money

RockinNColumbia said...

Zappa isn't going to knock out Blood on the Tracks

I think there are too many Beatles albums left for any of them to be on top; I think it will be Born to Run or DSOTM.

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised "Blood on the Tracks" hasn't been on the list, but I'm equally surprised "We're Only in It for the Money" hasn't, either. You may be right, though. But I'm positive a Beatles album will be on top. I've never seen a well-respected Greatest Albums list where The Beatles didn't reign.

Allison said...

Are all the bloggers members of WTMD? I am. I hope they reach their goal and continue to air great tunes. We are lucky to have them in our community & I'm looking forward to discovering more about the local music scene through WTMD.

Unknown said...

Unfortunately, I think that Zappa peaked with Apostrophe on this list. That being said, I feel that there are just too many other important albums not mentioned for him to fit in the top 8... as I have it, these are the remaining albums (in no order):

Born To Run - Boss
London Calling - Clash
Dark Side - Floyd
White Album
Abbey Road
Sgt. Peppers
Joshua Tree - U2
Blood on the Tracks - Dylan

I am a huge Zappa fan, an I believe he deserves a top 10 spot, I just don't see it happening with those albums yet to go.

Anonymous said...

That's right. "Blood on the Tracks" should show up. The Beatles are probably working against themselves in terms of votes. Heck, I only picked one Beatles album. (Abbey Road)

Yeah, I'm a member. It's made me very passionate about the station. Drives my wife crazy.

Not one Foo Fighters LP on this list? C'mon, they only had the Rock Album of the Year! "Skin & Bones" might be one of the best live LP's of all time.

Anonymous said...

Already renewed my membership and now I definitely know at least one reason why...hearing one of my favorite songs...Dylan's "Idiot Wind"... on the radio - awesome! Thanks & keep up the great work!

Unknown said...

Wait! the Beatles still have three contenders - Sgt. Peppers, The White Album, and Abbey Road. They couldn't take the top three could they?

RockinNColumbia said...

Wow, DSOTM triple-teamed by the Beatles. Can it divide and conquer? I'm on the edge of my seat ;-)

OK...i have been listening to WTMD since the beginning, prior to that, college radio in NY/NJ/PA/TN/AR/MO and non-commercial radio going back to WCVT and WHFS in the 70's, really into Athens GA music, REM, etc. I know every band and album on the list...so...who the h*LL is "neutral milk hotel"?

Anonymous said...

Hello,

Enjoyed your listing...however, not one ZZ Top album in the top 897? Don't get me wrong...I love the new MIA album and most of what you have included, but ZZ Top's "Tres Hombres" is one of the finest rock & roll records of all time. Before Hendrix passed away he named Billy Gibbons his favourite guitarist...and this album is still fresh and remains largely influential among both R&R and country artists. Perhaps just an oversight on your part...but I feel you are missing big parts of music history (Can "Tago Mago" not listed either??). Thanks though for an entertaining countdown and keep up the good work and support of independent music!

Anonymous said...

So, now that it's all over, it's time for some stats. Which artists had the most albums on the list, oldest and newest albums on the list. Anything else worth noting?

Anonymous said...

Wait, wait, wait, how does the Stroke's "Is This It?" beat Gang of Four's "Entertainment"? ... Also, Wilco apparently beat out The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead". Not that older is necessarily better, but one would usually assume that the derivative woulde placed lower. I know it was voted on, but it seems rather.... random, other than the usual 'every Beatles album' mentality of most 'top albums' lists. It's really odd when you look at the list as a ranking - White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" is better than Television's "Marquee Moon" and The Cure's "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me"? Wha?

Anonymous said...

Where was Pink Floyd's "The Wall". I was sure that would be number 1. Also.. no Nine Inch Nails. I know there are so many "greatest albums" but I was kind of disappointed in many albums that didn't make it anywhere on the list.

Unknown said...

No Stooges?
No Modern Lovers?
No Can?
No Sly?
No James Brown?

Legendary Lovett said...

Pink Floyd's The Wall was #29, Nine Inch Nails was also on there, three times actually

312. Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine
682. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
720. Nine Inch Nails- The Fragile

Legendary Lovett said...

Sly was also on there

585. Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!

and James Brown

340. James Brown - Live at The Apollo (1962)

It's a pretty intense list, remember listeners voted on all the albums on there.

These lists are always fun but so subjective. So take them in that spirit.

With all the comments about very young participants, I bet that many of those 15 year olds (listening to this station) are a lot more music savvy than your typical 15 year old or even your typical 45 year old.

It would have been interesting to have everyone check off a box with their age group. Then we could see how people picked by age.

Everyone always likes the music of their era best. Growing up in the sixties, I'm partial to that decade (and of course it is the best by far)!

sivagitagod said...

Actually a pretty darn good list considering. Too much Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Radiohead and etc undergrad music but still less than you'd expect I guess and a lot of great albums I'd completely forgotten about. My suggestion would be to ditch the cardinal ordering of the albums, that leads to too many laughers.

Anonymous said...

No Social Distortion???????

Fun, never the less...

I always like to play the "How many albums in this list did Adrian Belew contribute to ?" game.

Anyone care to play ?

Not a bad list overall when you consider how many albums were involved. It's a pleasant surprise to see Liz Phair's whitechocolatespaceegg anywhere at all, although Counting Crows' August and Everything After has no right being as high as number 20! And where's Big Star's Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers? I'm sure there are a number of other classics that could replace some of the lesser titles here, but it's inevitable that some of the best are gonna be overlooked. (Perhaps expanding to an even 1000 would've helped.) Here's a few that were missing that I would've liked to have seen in the latter half cause I think they're incredibly underrated:

Milla Jovovich: The Divine Comedy

Chris Isaak: Forever Blue

Supergrass: I Should Coco

Split Enz: Time and Tide
