Hmm... keep listening. They played one that I voted for so far (the Jeff Buckley song), but I also voted for "Come Together" and I can't imagine that didn't make it...

Agreed, you claim to play many genres of music but I hear next to zero Progressive Rock. Music with a bit more complexity. Yet every year Nearfest, Rosfest, 3RP, CalProg, Baha Prog attract 1000's of listeners. Needless to say none of my votes have been played either. And if you think its all old school stuff, then where is IQ, Karmakanic, Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree, IZZ, Echolyn, Oblivion Sun, California Guitar Trio, Sylvan, etc. etc.? all current and some local bands. You cater to singer-songwriter songs only. Most of the music you play sounds like punky folk music and musically quite simplistic. Its really a shame. You could be a lot better than you think you are. I only listen because its the lesser of two evils- commercial radio and WTMD...and thats only when I dont have my ipod plugged into my radio gizmo. Even WHFS and WGTB, your predecessors, dabbled in a more diverse variety then you do. I dont dislike the music you play, but get just as tired of the tunnel vision you have as I do of commercial radio....with or without the commercials.

Dang you're a harsh critic! Be sure to listen to Stuck In The Jam with Bug on Sunday nights. I think you'll find the new breed of Prog Rock artists to your liking.

Also, when you have an artist you'd like us to know about and play send the suggestion wtmd@towson.edu We're always happy to investigate listener suggestions.

if i have to hear one more beatles song i think i'm going to scream! my list was way more imaginative than that, and still not one of my songs have been played!

I'm not a big fan of "the list" format, as a rule, but this oddly enough is better than most. I guess because it doesn't aspire to be the "best of" anything. Additionally, please try and refrain from political rhetoric.I like not having to hear any snarky comments between songs, but during this drive some people have been desparaging others and it is no fun.

I'm surprised how much of the list is classic rock mainstream---I mean all of the songs are good----it's just that they were played to excess in the past--but I'm enjoying the music I haven't heard--keep it up--it's fun

Interesting list so far. Does anyone know which Stevie Ray Vaughan song was number 495?

@Miss Rau - "Come Together" is on the list at #267.

I'd like to have a CD set of all 500 Desert Island songs - what a great eclectic mix of a lot of great music that I know and don't know!

Are you not refreshing your last five played list?

even though most of the top ten matched the "best of" count down, jeff buckley was a nice surprise!

Jeff Buckley's immortal "Hallelujah" was a great surprise as that is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time.

Now, I love 89.7 and while I think it is a valuable station and indeed just about the only local one playing music I like, I would agree with some of the posters here in that they can be very narrow-minded when it comes to what they play. WTMD prides themselves on the variety of genres they play, that they are very indie-friendly, but it's always interesting to me whenever they do these listener-created lists and the results are way more varied then what they actually play. I do tend to think that they play too much of the singer/songwritery stuff, which I DO like, but a lot of it falls in the middle of the road, almost easy listening categories and tends to be rather boring honestly.

When you take a look at this list and see bands like, Broken Social Scene, Grizzly Bear, The Knife, Explosions in the Sky and the general amount of indie rock acts that their listeners are obviously into, it makes me wonder why they don't actually play more of this? I mean, how often do you actually hear The Replacements on WTMD? I really wish they would embrace more of the ROCK/Indie ROCK music that their listeners are fans of.

And on a side note, it's also interesting to see some of the more recent songs make it so high on the list, like Edward Sharpe's "Home" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep". Granted, these are great songs, but I think these are more a case of them being recent favorites of the listeners that they haven't tired of hearing yet, just because they are fairly new. I seriously doubt these tracks would rank anywhere near as high in a year, 5 years, 10 years and on, like these tracks by the Beatles, The Stones, Bruce...or even Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah".

I love the list too. I think only two or three of my songs made it. So many I didn't think of when jotting down 10 off the top of my head. Of course there are a lot of Beatles songs... duh. WTMD is doing a spectacular job.

I'm curious to know how many people voted and the system used to rank the list. Did a #1 vote on someones list count more than a #10 vote? Any chance we can see the statistics on the voting?
