If my math is right, we have and even split of 14 Islanders and 14 Yanks left. I'm only confident about Dylan and maybe Bruce or Jimi in the top 10 though for Team America.

Kudos to anyone who voted for Joni Mitchell...she is a living legend. However, you owe it to yourself to seek out and listen to Laura Nyro, also one of the greatest artists of all time. While you're at it, check out Chris Whitley. Both left us far too soon and deserve a place on this list.

In light of our curent financial crisis brought on by our monetary elite; and blamed on our monatary deficient. I suggest we let Mojo NIxon sing his "I Hate Bankers" as our #1 pick. And let the Beatles settle for #2. I'm sure Sir Paul and Ringo would graciously agree; since they are proper English gentlemen from working class neiborhoods, same as us Baltimorons. What's more we could have a bit of "Elvis is Everywhere" to work us up into the proper Mojo NIxon frame of mind!

Here is my grip...Not with the countdown, but with the song selection for the artists they are playing...

Nirvana for instance.

I can go to definitely 3 maybe even 4 local commercial stations and here the songs you played from them..."Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Bloom" "Come As You Are", and "Heart Shaped Box"...

Since you are going on and on about being unique about the music you play. And can't hear alot of the music you play on other stations in Baltimore or many places throughout the country.

You should have played some of thier better songs that I know the listeners definitely would have enjoyed, like About a Girl From Bleach, "Sliver" from Incesticide...or really go deep and play "Floyd The Barber" off Bleach or even "Verse Chorus Verse" which is sorta popular, but not everyone knows where to find it. Plus many others.

Sorry to rant.

This could be for any artist in the countdown, not just Nirvana.

Thanks for letting me vent, I am a huge Nirvana fan and was a little disappointed with the song selections.

This is a great list, and a great project. I love the diversity.

Before the countdown started, I made a list of bands who should make the 897 but probably won't. I'm thrilled to see that almost all of them made it. (I am surprised that Godspeed You! Black Emperor didn't make it but Explosions in the Sky came in at 687. Weird.)

Plus, I'm happy to see that some of the artists who I think are grossly overrated but always top "best-of" lists have been bumped lower than usual this time around.

I made my donation. I couldn't donate as much as I would've liked, but I had to give something because I've had so much fun listening to this countdown!

Anonymous said...

You guys are awesome with your marathon fund raising. I love the fact that you have kpet my interest with the 897 greatest artists countdown during this fund raising time. I have not turned off my computer or radio to find out the next greatest artist. Keep the interest going during your fund raising times. I bet it brings in more money. And, thanks for all the good music. My Ipod is full of WTMD artists.

Big omission...Tom Tom Club. Unless they are somehow lumped with Talking Heads.

Unknown said...

Hey Brian,

So you're counting the Canadians with the Yanks? Since your last comment we ticked off 1 American and 1 Canadian. I think we're nearly on the same page, because I have it: England 11, USA 11, Ireland 2, Canada 1, Jamaica 1. Or UK 12 Irish Republic 1, depending on how you divide things. Either way it's something like Islands 14, North America 12.

Given the Indie slant of the station, and what has happened so far in the countdown, I would expect a very good showing for R.E.M. and the Talking Heads. They could easily break the top 10.

Unknown said...

Somehow I missed the last two. 2 more Yanks down. Islanders 14 North Americans 10.

This should be interesting!

Anonymous said...

No Southern Culture on the Skids?

Unknown said...

Jim, you're right, need better collective terms. Despite being an Islander, I'll move Bob Marley in with the other 7 into the NANPA dialing group. With Bowie gone there are still 11 "Anglo-Irish".

Unknown said...

Actually I was expecting Jerry Lee Lewis to come before Elvis; now I'm having doubts, maybe it will be Benny Goodman, or maybe a certain Italian tenor.

nicoxen said...

Ok, let me start by saying that I love this countdown. It's so pure and so organic. A few critical marks:

Hip/Hop and R&B artists are grossly underrepresented. Maybe that's due to WTMD listening audience, but still...

I can't believe the Beach Boys didn't crack the TOP 10. There was no band, save for the Beatles, who were more influential in the development of Rock-n-Roll than the Beach Boys (especially Brian Wilson). While the BB may not be as popular these days, it saddens me that younger music fans like myself don't recognize their place in rock-n-roll history.

With Nirvana and Pearl Jam already appearing, it doesn't give us much hope for an artist after the 90's to crack the top 20 (U2 got started in the 80's). Really, in 19 years of great music not one artist from this period has risen to the top? The 1960's will have at least 5 of the top 10. Come on 1990's.

Unknown said...

Van Morrison: "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)"

Jackie Wilson: "I got fewer votes than 3 Doors Down, a-ha and Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin ?"

Unknown said...

Just goes to show that the British Invasion has had a deep and lasting impact!

Unknown said...

nicoxen, U2 actually started in the '70's...

It does make sense that the artists that made the most lists are the ones at the roots of things. Artists from the '60's have a deeper and broader influence than later decades, but also overshadow previous decades. Many artists from the '60's are still active. It would be interesting to see survey results in 10 or 20 years to see if they have faded in the public consciousness.

I am so sad the countdown is coming to an end today! I've been listening the entire time with my 11-month-old Max, using it as a way of exposing him to a crazy awesome array of artists and styles. We've been dancing like crazy...he loves it! Thanks, WTMD, for playing what people asked for :)

And yes, I am a member since day one.

Unknown said...

David Bowie at #20?! I thought top 10 for sure. There aren't too many artists who can make awesome, innovative, and original albums for 40+ years (and still going). I still love ya, Ziggy!

One artist I'm surprised to not see on the list is Phoenix. People are scalping their $18 dollar tickets to Phoenix's Sunday show in DC for hundreds of dollars on Craigslist yet William Shatner beat them onto the list? I call foul on that!

Anonymous said...

There you go Nicoxen... Radiohead in at #17 and got their start in the 90's and still going strong today. They are well deserving of a spot in the top 20.

Anonymous said...

So who's left?

I know someone's come up with a list.

Unknown said...

There's a wild card in here somewhere! I still have the Stooges on my projected list, but I doubt they'll make it. Same for Alice Cooper, Donovan, Jerry Lee Lewis and Benny Goodman. Can't see how any of them would make it now. Probably a newer artist an old fart like me wouldn't think of.

Anonymous said...

Jim: here's your earlier list with the ones played removed - up to REM. The other 4 are one's you had but I agree likely won't make it. There's 15 left on the list and 15 spots. You could be presiscent.

Beatles, Dylan, Zeppelin, Floyd, Springsteen, The Who, The Clash, Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Neil Young, U2, Eric Clapton, Alice Cooper, Stones,

Mozart, Donovan, Stooges, Benny Goodman,

nicoxen said...

damn, how could I forget Radiohead?

ok, I stand corrected. I think #17 is too high, but I'll accept it.

I think bands from the 1990's don't get a fair shake because format radio ruined music at the end of the 20th century. Bands like Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Nine inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, and Nirvana didn't get nearly as much air play in their era as bands like The Beatles, The Stones, and Led Zeppelin got in late 60's and 70's. Those were great times, because the most popular bands on FM radio happened to be the best bands also. That was not true for much of the last 20 years or so (unless you were fortunate enough to have a station like WHFS in your town). Turn on DC 101 or 98 Rock and your bound to here 3 Doors Down or Nickleback 9 times b-4 you here one of the artists mentioned above.

The Clash! Indeed, brothers and sisters.

I understand there are two camps of people those who worship Dave Matthews Band and those that would like to never hear them again - while I do fall in the later of those 29?????????? Really??? Even you fans must realize that there is no way they should beat out Tom Waits, The Band, CSN, Elton, Fleetwood Mac, or Janis... I mean really. Plus WTMD doesn't even play them that much - which is probably why I'm such a devoted listener :-) so how did this get so high?? Crazy randomness I guess. Just odd. I also am not sure about Nirvana being so high up.

katy said...

yes, i vote for the beatles at #1 as well. anybody who's tired of hearing about the beatles should really break out some of their albums and re-get to know their stuff. freaking incredible. for sheer number of excellent melodies, they should be number 1, even outside of all the crazy influential stuff they did.

still sad that jump little children and ozomatli didn't make the list. y'all should check out ozomatli. and it's kind of a crime that dispatch, oar and guster all made the list, but not jump.

i like wilco and radiohead and all, but really, aretha, james brown and ray c all ought to have been higher up. guess we tmd listeners are pretty white.

It's probably just some prank for the mystery artist. This station IS run out of a college.. Most likely Rick Astley or someone stupid got a few hundred votes from a bunch of college kids. Either that or Ozzy, Alice Cooper, or Miles Davis. Any of those three would surprise me at this high. Or maybe number one really is just "us the listeners of WTMD". That would make sense.. let's just wait and see.

I didn't see Alice either, but surely not Top 10.

Robin Trower
Foreigner
Alice Cooper

Any others??

Of course, probably best to wait til the actual countdown is over.

WTMD - You're the BEST!! Thank you. Baltimore music scene wouldn't be the same without you.

Ok i didnt see miles at first. Thanks. It must be the "your number one for listening". It has to be. Still awaiting Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Springsteen, and Zeppelin.

Haha i just heard him mess up. Instead of saying, we got another "hendrix song up next" He said Zeppelin. =D thats ok it doesnt surprise me, Zeppelin at #6

katy said...

oh, and the offspring, which is totally a rockin' band.

it CANNOT be "you, the listener." i will throw up while driving. it's gotta be someone obvious who we're all forgetting. like mojo nixon. :)

katy said...

i hate to tell you all this, but amy winehouse isn't on the list either. no chance people went insane and voted her into the top 10, is there?

Anonymous said...

Someone earlier mentioned Woody Guthrie. Has he appeared yet?

katy said...

woody guthrie is at 136.

Anonymous said...

ok, David Byrne just does not make sense in the Top 10

Joe said...

There we go, the wild card - David Byrne

nicoxen said...

It was DAVID BYRNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

There you go - David Byrne. Crazy that more people put him down than Talking Heads

Anonymous said...

David Byrne #6. What the?

Anonymous said...

David Byrne? Seriously? B/C he's got local roots? Hey, I love the Talking Heads, but, well, whatever...

[MARK] said...

David Byrne!! How is it that no one guessed that!! Ok top 5:
#1 Beatles
#2 Bob Dylan
#3 Bruce Springsteen
#4 Rolling Stones
#5 Led Zeppelin

katy said...

hmmm. weird. how very indie of us.

and that means no amy winehouse at all. which is a shame because, crazy though she is, she put out a killer album and is a helluva performer.

Anonymous said...

So, the Talking Heads AND David Byrne beat Elvis (among others - The Beach Boys, James Brown, etc.).

Okay.

Anonymous said...

there are 5 left. safe to say 4 of 'em are Led Zep, Dylan, Beatles, Stones. Who does that leave? Rick Astley? One can hope. Fingers crossed...

Anonymous said...

Noticeably Absent:

Bill Evans

nicoxen said...

I love David Byrne. He is definitely one of the most important artists last 30 years, but I don't think his solo career exceeds his work with the Talking Heads. And if it's all about the Baltimore connection then why not Tupac.

Anonymous said...

Bruce, of course

Anonymous said...

I wonder if David Byrne + Talking Heads > Dylan.

Grog said...

Where is Dr hook and The medicine 9show? Where is the Stawbs? And where is Aphrodites Child? Also where was Morphine?

Anonymous said...

Someone asked about Lenny Kravitz. HE'S NOT ON THE LIST!!!

If that's the case, someone f'd up. He didn't make my Top15 or even my Top25 but the dude is deserving of the list.

Mistakes get made but this oversight was huge. Next time, call the list "Favorite Artists...etc" because having Captn. Kirk and Brittney on the list and missing on Lenny is a J-O-K-E.

Byrnes as #6?!?!? Uh-uh, no way. no how and no way should the cat be anywhere near the Top10?!?!?

Unknown said...

Tracks I want to hear from the final 5.

Le Boss: Chimes of Freedom
Zep: In My Time of Dying
Stones: Gimme Shelter
Dylan: Maggie's Farm
Fab4: Here Comes the Sun -> The End

Anonymous said...

The Boss at #5.. I thought #3. Oh well

Anonymous said...

How many songs from each top 5 artist? More that four?

How many songs played from #1 artist? 6 or more? half-hour?

LedZep - Sick Again
Dylan - Serve Somebody
Stones - Stray Cat Blues
Beatles - Hey Bulldog

Anonymous said...

They better play Stairway for Zeppelin

Anonymous said...

David Byrne # 6 - seriously?

Anonymous said...

David Byrne's family and friends from Baltimore must have voted a lot.

Anonymous said...

Maybe one is on the list and I missed it. If not, here is my list of noteworthy artists who didn't make the top 897 - very surprising.

Still, it's all good TMD...great fun for a great cause. Not trying to be critical, just noting some of my faves who didn't make the cut! ouch.

Alice Cooper
Lenny Kravitz
Amy Winehouse
Foreigner
Def Leopard
Robin Trower
The Scorpions
Dr. Hook
Good Charlotte
Star Sailor
The Offspring
Rick Astley
Ozzy Osborne
Jeff Healey
Big Head Todd & Monsters
Frank Marino (& Mahogany Rush)

Don't forget the Beatles opened for Herman's Hermit's. However neither has opened for Mojo Nixon. Get the picture!

Anonymous said...

Only 2 spots left! I think The beatles are gonna beat out Dylan

Anonymous said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Dylan IS number 1!

slippaz said...

Where the hell was Donovan, The Spencer Davis Group, Henry Mancini, the Screaming Trees, Interpol, and a boat load of other great bands? yet Spears makes it. I'm still waiting for K-fed, only one spot left....

shelmont said...

The Beatles will always be #1!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

David Byrne at #6 is as eye-opening as seeing the likes of Spears and Shatner taking up spots that should have had ____ or ____ (you name 'em). Will TMD release results? Will the next top 897 list be more specifically focused to a genre?

Overall, an outstanding countdown....WTMD, I salute you.

Signed,
A returning member!!

Anonymous said...

The Beatles are one.

Unknown said...

First off, let me say thank you WTMD for an entertaining and engaging countdown.

I confess 5 or 6 of my votes were for my favorites rather than those I thought were "the greatest". But even I could have picked 50 or maybe even 100 I may not have included some of the big names many are surprised not to see:

Pavarotti

Bob Mould, Melissa Ethridge, The Cult, Lenny Kravitz
, Camper Van Beethoven, The Scorpions

The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Coasters, Eddie Cochran
, Bill Haley, Ricky Nelson, Carl Perkins, Jackie Wilson, Dion
, Bobby Darin, The Four Seasons, The Platters, Wilson Pickett
, Sam & Dave, The Yardbirds, Duane Eddy, Martha and the Vandellas
, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Rascals, Del Shannon, The Staple Singers
, The Lovin' Spoonful, Solomon Burke, Ritchie Valens, Isaac Hayes
, The Righteous Brothers, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five
, The Ink Spots, Elmore James, Professor Longhair, Gene Autry
, Kris Kristofferson

CMRL said...

Long Live Dylan...

Anonymous said...

Brian, yardbirds and Lovin' Spoonful are on there

Anonymous said...

My WTF moment: David Byrne at #6. He's good, but Talking Heads were already listed @21! Is it because he went to high school here in Maryland? Arbutus, I think.

Anonymous said...

No surprise but still great to see Beatles #1.

anybody see Stone Temple Pilots on the list?

Anonymous said...

Congratulations WTMD. The tremendous effort of all volunteers and staff will reap tremendous rewards for sure. The crown Jewel of the Baltimore air waves rules!!

Kudos to Steve and the rest of TMD's team. To Amy W. - you're terrific - will you marry me? lol

Anyway, that's it until the next countdown/membership drive, around Thanksgiving right?

Keep up the great work!!

Anonymous said...

stone temple pilots # 294

Ben folds should have been at least in the top 100, it got stuck at about 106, come on.

John from Parkville said...

The countdown was great. My only problem was during the #1 Beatles set. I wish the DJ's hadn't spent so much time talking during the last 30 minutes. We waited all this time for the # 1 artist but most of what we heard was chatter and only 4 songs. For me, this greatly diminished the emotional impact of finally hearing the Greatest Musical Artist of All Time! Couldn't you guys thank new members after the last few precious minutes instead of during?
That was my only problem with the countdown! Otherwise, I thought it was great. No other station does this sort of thing, sadly.

Doug Sobon said...

Hooray for The Beatles at #1 and hooray for no Jewel!

Anonymous said...

I browsed the list quickly but didn't see Sam Cook.
Was also dissapointed at no Lemonheads. How does Britney Spears get on but not The Lemonheads? Did the Beastie Boys make the list? Also thought Dick Dale should be there and where is James Brown?

Anonymous said...

Laugh at Spears (896) but she got on the list and her more talented contemporaries Christina Agulara and Gwen Stefani didn't so publicity still tops talent.

Unknown said...

While I appreciated the enthusiasm for The Beatles, the selection of tunes was -- I'd guess -- made by someone who wasn't around while the music was being made. A tune from "LET IT BE" for gosh sake? Two solo McCartney tunes? Now as to what I would've selected.... beats the hell out of me. One of the definitive early songs -- I Wanna Hold Your Hand -- middle years -- Elanor Rigby -- then I Am the Walrus -- then, sure, Hey Jude...
Peas and Love, TMD, GREAT STUFF! Best, Lea Jones and The Swing States Road Show

Anonymous said...

seriously people the world will not come to an end if the beatles are not voted number one.

Anonymous said...

Lennon, the beatles, the stones, the who, Jimi, Clapton, Elvis, Van, Zappa, the Band

Anonymous said...

moe.
The Fall
Television
John Cale
The Stranglers
The Cramps
Public Image Limited
Stan Ridgway (WOV/Drywall)
Charlatans
Buzzcocks
Mekons
Marianne Faithful
Social Distortion
Victoria Williams
Golden Earring

That's 15 in no particular order who are/were actually innovative artists with engaging bodies of work, as opposed to the one hit wonder and pop dross that takes up a lot of this list.

The biggest travesty of all perhaps, is David Byrne at #6 while Brian Eno is at #485. Hopefully someone out there besides me sees the irony it that. Oh well. The people have spoken.

It was fun to hear all the occaisionally awesome music in between the flotsam and jetsam and the soliciting.

From a longtime listener and a cd of the month member.

Cheers

Brian

Bobby Darin was on the list. Way too low, but he was there.

Would have liked to see Scorpions and Professor Longhair on there.

The whole thing was a ton of fun.

Karen said...

Cannot stomach Britney Spears. Where was Incubus? And U2 was only #8 -- give me a break! Was surprised to see David Byrne posted so high up; but that's cool. His lyrics are as intense, intelligent and deep as U2.

Anonymous said...

Oh good, glad to see that Baltimore thinks more highly of My Chemical Romance and Panic! at the Disco higher than The Get Up Kids or Owen. Baltimore, are you retarded? and how the heck does Cyndi Lauper make ANY greatest artists of all time list let alone beat Sufjan Stevens, John Butler Trio, and Queens of the Stone Age?!?!?!

Anonymous said...

There were some glaring errors on this list. First off, how could nick drake, big star, elliott smith and velvet underground be so low. As far as influence goes, nobody was more influential then velvet underground and big star. Lou Reed and Alex Chilton were pioneers. The same goes with Nick Drake. Ah this list just proved how mindless some people are. Also, how wasn't Michael Jackson higher and also Aretha Franklin?

Anonymous said...

I take partial responsibility for this, as I left them off my list - Southern Culture on the Skids.

Mark F. said...

I know this comment comes in the wake of his death, but looking at this list now and seeing MJ at #80, behind the likes of Coldplay, Wilco, and (for God sakes) the Jerry Garcia Band(!) strikes me as absurd. Say what you will about him, but there's no denying his impact on music far, far exceeds most of those listed ahead of him. I'd still keep the Beatles, Dylan, the Stones, and perhaps a few others ahead of him, but Jackson has to be higher than #80.

Anonymous said...

No particular squabble with your picks---except that the title should have been the Greatest ROCK Artists. You can't have an "all-time greats" list and utterly ignore classical and jazz.

keypad deadbolt said...

I propose a new list to test anonymous' theory. The 897 worst artists. (Maybe it wold be the same list in reverse.)
